From the Dean's Desk October-2026

The past month has brought together several moments that reflect the breadth of the IIT Bombay experience. These include celebrating national milestones, recognising academic achievements, strengthening partnerships, and creating opportunities for our alumni, students, and faculty to connect with the Institute.

Our three Special Reports capture important moments in the life of the Institute. IIT Bombay’s celebration of India’s 80th Independence Day was a reflection on the country’s journey since 1947 and the role of institutions such as ours in contributing to its progress through education, research, and innovation. We also look back at the 64th Convocation and Departmental Degree Award Function, which marked an important milestone for our graduating students, and Teachers’ Day, when we recognised the educators who continue to shape the IIT Bombay experience.

Our corporate collaborations reflect the value of bringing academic expertise and industry experience together to work on important challenges. This month, we look at IIT Bombay’s collaborations with Tata Power, focused on clean-energy research, and Optiver, through the IIT Bombay–Optiver AI Innovation Lab.

Faculty excellence takes many forms, from research and teaching to mentorship, knowledge translation, and new areas of intellectual exploration. Our Faculty Spotlight brings together recent recognitions for IIT Bombay faculty, along with a glimpse into Prof. Ganesh Ramakrishnan’s journey from learning Sanskrit to exploring its connections with computational linguistics and emerging technologies.

The Mumbai Alumni Connect 2026 brought alumni together for an evening of conversations, reflections, and shared memories, while also marking 25 years of the IIT Bombay Alumni Association. We also look ahead to the upcoming batch reunions scheduled towards the end of 2026 and early 2027, which will offer alumni opportunities to reconnect with classmates and the Institute.

There is more for our alumni community to look forward to in the coming months, including Hostel 9’s farewell, the Women Hostels’ Reunion and Lumina Connect, and our annual Alumni Day in December. We look forward to welcoming our alumni to these occasions and to continuing the conversations and connections that keep the IIT Bombay community close, wherever in the world they may be.

As always, you’ll also find our regular features, including Alumni Giving, Centres of Excellence, Lecture Series, Research Spotlight, Faculty Accolades, Student Engagements, other Institute News and Highlights, Upcoming Events, and more in this month’s newsletter.

Finally, I also invite members of our alumni community to follow our social media channels, including the Dean ACR LinkedIn, X, and Facebook pages, where regular updates are shared on alumni engagement and campus activities.

I hope you enjoy this edition of the newsletter and find opportunities to reconnect with the people, ideas, and initiatives that continue to shape IIT Bombay.

Warmly,

Prof. Upendra V. Bhandarkar
