Mr. Nandan Nilekani

B. Tech. - 1978, Electrical Engineering

Nandan Mohanrao Nilekani was born in Bengaluru and received his bachelor’s degree from IIT Bombay. “My five years at IIT-Bombay were the defining experience of my life,” said Mr Nilekani. Mr Nilekani is well known for being an outstanding strategist, an excellent analytical thinker, and an extraordinary communicator. He co-founded Infosys, the most definitive software company to emerge from India. As an advisor on innovation to the National Payments Corporation of India, he played a critical role in the launch of UPI (Unified Payments Interface).

After his outstanding success with Infosys, Mr Nilekani took on another mammoth challenge when he was made the Chairman of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). This gave birth to the Aadhar Card, an Indian biometric ID system that includes the demographic information of billion-plus Indian residents. Over the years, Mr Nilekani has continued to give back to his alma mater to refurbish its infrastructure and establish state-of-the-art hostels on campus.

His philanthropic endowment ensured the maintenance, upgradation, renovation, and building of additional rooms at Hostel 8, which eventually became a benchmark for all the other hostels on campus.

Continuing his theme of providing a better quality of life to his alma mater’s current students, Mr Nilekani’s generosity led to the setting up Hostels 12, 13, and 14. The three hostels cater to the needs of more than 1000 national and international students with world-class amenities. They include a 24X7 state-of-the-art CCTV facility, gym, a lavish lounge room, separate areas for reading/computer, playing pool, music, and boxing, a common area, laundry facilities, and more. The hostels also have an outdoor volleyball court, a badminton court, and an open playground.

Mr Nilekani’s generosity laid the foundation for the Society for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (SINE), which was set up in 2004 to foster entrepreneurship and nurture tech start-ups. So far, SINE has incubated more than 180 startups and has raised Rs. 4425 Crores.

His endowment fund to the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) has helped and energised its faculty, students, and support staff. The fund allowed the department to buy equipment, meet operational costs, create chair professorships, and help students attend international seminars and symposiums. The Department of CSE at IIT Bombay is among the most prestigious and demanding for students to be admitted. The department attracts top rankers from the JEE to its B.Tech. Programme and applicants with GATE scores greater than 850 to its M. Tech. Programme.

Every year, the CSE department publishes several research articles in top-tier conferences and journals (as ranked by CORE). The CSE faculty have brought accolades to the Institute by winning many eminent awards such as the Padma Shri, Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar award, Infosys Prize, and many other esteemed fellowships.

Mr. Kanwal Rekhi

B. Tech. - 1967, Electrical Engineering

Mr. Rekhi worked in emerging areas of technology before he founded Excelan in 1982, a network technology company that introduced many pioneering products to the industry. Excelan went public in 1987 and merged with Novell in 1989. He is the co-founder of TiE (The Indus Entrepreneurs), a global networking platform for Indian entrepreneurs. As president of TiE, Mr. Rekhi advises and promotes young entrepreneurs and, under his leadership, TiE has spread to many cities in the USA.

Mr. Rekhi has often acknowledged the role that IIT Bombay played in his successful career. He was a trailblazer when it came to paying it forward to his alma mater. He recollects when he returned to Mumbai in 1993 (his first visit back home after he graduated from IIT Bombay in 1967) and decided to make a quick trip to his beloved IITB Powai campus. But what he saw shocked him. His memory of a brand-new campus from when he was a student now consisted of hostel buildings that were falling apart and had not been painted in close to two decades.

A year later he met with Prof. Sukhatme, then Director of IITB, and learned that the Institute did not have the budget to cater to ‘incidental expenses’ like the refurbishment of campus infrastructure. Mr. Rekhi immediately offered to fund the renovation and sent a cheque for $50,000 to his alma mater. He learned to his surprise that there was no legal precedent for Government Institutes like IIT Bombay to accept private donations. “It got the wheels turning in Delhi and took literally an act of parliament to enable. It was three years before the check was finally cashed.”

Mr. Rekhi continued to give back to his alma mater and set up the Kanwal Rekhi School of Information Technology (KRESIT) at IIT Bombay. In 2006, KRESIT merged with the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) at the Institute. Dr. Romesh Wadhwani

Electrical Engineering, B. Tech. - 1969

Padma Shri awardee Dr. Romesh Wadhwani is a renowned entrepreneur, technologist, and philanthropist. His journey began with a B.Tech. degree in Electrical Engineering from IIT Bombay in 1969, a stepping stone that led him to the United States, where he earned his master’s and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University. Dr. Wadhwani’s academic prowess was further recognized with an honorary doctorate from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay in August 2018.

Over his distinguished career, Dr. Wadhwani has built several successful technology companies, each leaving a significant mark in their respective industries. He is the founder, chairman, and CEO of SAIGroup, a fast-growing operating group of leading AI companies that deliver a new generation of advanced AI solutions to transform the enterprise. SAIGroup companies focus on driving revenue growth and operational excellence for customers in their vertical sectors, including retail, CPG, life sciences, payer/provider, manufacturing and process industries, defense, financial services, and media.

Before founding SAIGroup, Dr. Wadhwani was the founder and CEO of Symphony Technology, a strategic private equity firm that builds great software and technology-enabled services companies. Dr. Wadhwani founded STG in 2002, growing it from a startup to $2.5 billion in combined revenue and 15,000 employees. Dr. Wadhwani was also the founder and CEO of Aspect Development Inc., a B2B software firm. Aspect Development was acquired in 2000 for $9.3 billion, the largest software acquisition at the time.

Philanthropy is central to Dr. Wadhwani’s life. He established the Wadhwani Foundation in 2001, a not-for-profit organization that aims to accelerate economic development by driving job creation through large-scale entrepreneurship, innovation, skilling, and government digital transformation initiatives. The Foundation today is scaling its impact across 15+ countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America through innovative programs that leverage the latest AI Technology and expansive global networks to democratize access to world-class resources, improving livelihoods and changing lives.

Dr. Wadhwani and his brother Sunil Wadhwani also established the Wadhwani Institute for AI (WIAI) for Social Good in Mumbai in 2018, a research institute and global hub for developing AI solutions for social good in public health, education, skilling, job creation, and infrastructure. The institute was awarded the Google Prize in 2019 for its innovative initiatives. In 2003, Dr. Wadhwani, along with his brother, was recognized by Time Magazine as one of the 100 most influential people in AI.

Reflecting on his commitment, Dr Wadhwani remarked, “I’m giving away 80 percent of my wealth. I don’t have to; no one’s forcing me to. I’m doing it voluntarily. A significant part of that is going back to India. Why am I doing it? Simply because I feel it’s right.”

Dr. Wadhwani’s deep connection to his alma mater, IIT Bombay, is evident in his philanthropic efforts. This commitment led to establishing The Wadhwani Electronic Lab (WEL) and the Wadhwani Research Centre for Bioengineering (WRCB) at IIT Bombay through the Wadhwani Foundation.

The Wadhwani Electronics Lab has evolved from a teaching lab to a development hub for student-led projects, fostering innovation and practical learning across multiple institutes in India. Further underscoring his belief in the Institute’s potential to uplift lives through research, innovation, and entrepreneurship, the WRCB Centre aims to become a world-class hub for the translation and commercialization of bioengineering research. Over the years, WRCB has supported the development of products and technologies that address the healthcare needs of India and other emerging economies. Its focus areas include Diagnostics, Therapeutics, MedTech, and Synthetic Biology, with several startups incubated at SINE as part of the initial funding from WRCB. In its second phase, WRCB concentrates on Therapeutics, AI and Machine Learning, and Medical Devices. The Centre continues to engage with industry partners, medical practitioners, and entrepreneurs to bring innovative technologies developed at IIT Bombay to the market.

In 2012, President Barack Obama appointed Dr. Wadhwani to the board of trustees of the John F. Kennedy Center. He is also a board member of the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, DC, and a Gates Buffet Giving Pledge member.

Dr. Wadhwani’s legacy is one of innovation, impact, and unwavering commitment to giving back, shaping a future where technology and philanthropy work hand in hand to create lasting change.
