It has been another vibrant and eventful month at IIT Bombay, marked by meaningful collaborations, thought-provoking conversations, pioneering research, and inspiring achievements by members of our extended Institute community. As always, it is a pleasure to share some of these milestones with you.

This issue carries special reports on two landmark events that reflect IIT Bombay’s growing role in shaping innovation and the future of higher education. Bharat Innovates 2026 brought together leaders from academia, industry, startups, and government to strengthen India’s innovation ecosystem and foster new global partnerships. Equally significant was the Faculty Alumni Network (FAN) Symposium 2026, which welcomed faculty, alumni, researchers, and industry experts for wide-ranging discussions on engineering education, frontier research, and deep technologies that will help shape India’s future. Together, these initiatives reaffirm the power of collaboration in driving meaningful impact.

One of the month’s most memorable moments was the first-ever IIT Bombay Europe Alumni Connect in Bonn, where alumni from across the continent came together to reconnect with one another and with their alma mater. Back home, we were also delighted to welcome back the Class of 1971 back to their alma mater. These gatherings are a wonderful reminder that while our alumni are spread across the globe, the IIT Bombay spirit continues to bring us together across borders and generations.

We are also delighted to feature a journey back in time to IIT Bombay’s earliest years through a beautifully researched story on the Institute’s first graduating class, the Class of 1962. Tracing the memories, experiences, and reflections of the pioneering batch through rare archival photographs and personal recollections, this special feature offers a nostalgic glimpse into the people and moments that helped shape IIT Bombay’s enduring legacy.

The generosity of our alumni continues to strengthen IIT Bombay in meaningful and transformative ways. We are delighted to acknowledge contributions that are advancing student innovation, strengthening cutting-edge research infrastructure, and enabling new academic initiatives in strategic areas of national importance. Our alumni also continue to inspire us in remarkable ways. In this issue’s Alumni Milestones, we celebrate an extraordinary achievement as an IIT Bombay alumnus summits Mount Everest—a powerful reminder that the Institute nurtures individuals whose pursuits extend far beyond laboratories, boardrooms, and classrooms.

But with the good come moments of challenge. I am deeply saddened by the untimely passing of Prof. Anirban Guha, which is a profound loss for the IIT Bombay family. An exceptional teacher, researcher, and innovator, Prof. Guha touched countless lives through his scholarship, mentorship, and dedication to advancing engineering in service of the nation. We remember him with deep respect and extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and students.

As always, this edition features research breakthroughs, developments across our centres of excellence and innovation hubs, lecture series, and more. Together, they reflect the energy, ambition, and collective achievements of the IIT Bombay community.

I invite you to engage with a few initiatives that are shaping our community’s future. As part of Giving Back, please consider contributing to our Scholarships and the Flourishing Hub campaigns. Each of these efforts reflects the generosity and shared commitment that make our alumni network strong.

Finally, I also invite members of our alumni community to follow our social media channels, including the Dean ACR LinkedInX, and Facebook pages, where regular updates are shared on alumni engagement and campus activities.

Our alumni remain among IIT Bombay’s greatest strengths, and your achievements, engagement, generosity, and enduring connection to the Institute continue to inspire our students, enrich our community, and strengthen our shared vision for the future. Thank you for being such an integral part of the IIT Bombay family. We hope you enjoy this edition of the newsletter and look forward to staying connected with you in the months ahead.

Warmly

Prof. Upendra V. Bhandarkar
