India and Japan share a commitment to building open, trustworthy AI foundations rooted in their own languages and scientific traditions. To that end, IIT Bombay has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the National Institute of Informatics, Japan, and BharatGen to advance collaborative research on large language models (LLMs) with enhanced scientific reasoning capabilities. The collaboration will focus on building multilingual LLMs that can process scientific content across languages, developing AI agents that can assimilate and utilise scientific information from publications, patents, and research reports, and exchanging researchers, students, and datasets between institutions.
