RESEARCH SPOTLIGHT

Blood Proteins to Detect Brain Tumours

The following article was originally published here.

Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM) is the most aggressive of all grades of a type of brain tumour known as glioma, with less than one year of life expectancy. Detection of brain tumours at the early stages of the disease is a challenge and may improve treatment outcomes. A recent research finds that it is possible to detect GBM by analysis of proteins in the blood serum.

Glioma brain tumours are caused due to an uncontrolled increase in certain cells known as ‘glial cells’. Gliomas form 80% of all brain and central nervous system tumours and 30% of malignant brain tumours. GBM (Glioblastoma Multiforme) is the fourth and final stage of Glioma. It is particularly aggressive and with presently available treatments, it is difficult to eradicate the uncontrolled growth of tumour cells, hence leading to early death.

From the Dean's Desk May-2024

Dear Alumnus/Alumna,

The warm breeze and blooming flowers all around Mumbai mean that spring season is officially upon us. Springtime is also mango time! The air is filled with palpable excitement as Mumbaikars eagerly await the chance to savor the luscious, juicy mangoes that are synonymous with this time of year. It’s a season of renewal and pleasure, and a fitting metaphor mirroring the continuous evolution happening here at IIT Bombay.

While spring has infused new life into our surroundings here at IIT Bombay, it also brought with it some amazing news for the Institute!

In the spirit of renewal and fresh beginnings that spring embodies, IIT Bombay is also embracing a significant leadership transition. I want to express my profound gratitude to Prof. Subhasis Chaudhuri for his visionary stewardship as Director. His tenure has greatly enriched our community, fostering growth and innovation. As we bid him farewell, we are delighted to welcome Prof. Shireesh Kedare from the Department of Energy Science and Engineering as the new Director of our Institute. Prof. Kedare has assumed his new responsibilities on May 6, 2024. I am excited to support him as he leads IIT Bombay into a promising future filled with new challenges and opportunities. Please join me in congratulating both Prof. Chaudhuri on his impactful tenure and Prof. Kedare on his new appointment.

I am delighted to share that the Institute has once again marked its presence on the global academic stage! IIT Bombay has climbed up two spots from 2023 to rank 45th globally in Engineering and Technology in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings by Subject for 2024. Look for more details in the Legacy of Excellence section of the newsletter.

As always, April 2024 was an extremely busy month for the Dean ACR office.

In our commitment to fostering innovative solutions that bridge the gap between academia and industry, IIT Bombay recently achieved two significant milestones. We are proud to announce the inauguration of the state-of-the-art 10X GMP Facility, designed to enhance real-world healthcare solutions, and the Gogri Hub for Membranes Research, a pioneering centre that focuses on water and wastewater treatment, biomedical applications, alternate energy, and gas separation. Please look for detailed Special Reports on both of these groundbreaking facilities in the newsletter.

IIT Bombay has partnered with Blockchain for Impact (BFI) to tackle India’s pressing healthcare challenges. This strategic collaboration combines our strengths in research and development with BFI’s focus on improving healthcare accessibility. More details on this transformative partnership are available in the Corporate Collaboration section of the newsletter.

I find myself reflecting on the poignant ebbs and flows of life within our IIT Bombay community. It is with a heavy heart that I share the sad news of the passing of our esteemed alumnus, Mr. Suresh Shankar Gurjar. Let us hold his family in our thoughts. Please look for more on Mr. Gurjar’s life in the In Memoriam section.

But alongside this extraordinarily sad news, there are also moments of celebration. I am pleased to commend our alumnus, Prof. Mayuresh V. Kothare, who was recently elected as a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Additionally, we celebrate our alumnus, Mr. Anil Chandhok, who has been honoured with the prestigious Cruz de Oficial de Orden del Mérito (Officer’s Golden Cross – Civil Merit Medal) by the Spanish government, recognizing his significant contributions to strengthening cultural ties between Spain and India. Please look for writeups on Prof. Kothare and Mr. Chandhok in the Alumni Accolades section of the newsletter.

These moments—both joyful and sorrowful—remind me of the deep bonds and shared legacy that connects all of us at IIT Bombay.

As always, we have all of our other regular articles including Student Success Stories, Faculty Accolades, Institute News and Highlights, Upcoming Events, and more in this month’s newsletter.

As we continue to navigate through both challenges and triumphs, our shared experiences and enduring connections remind us of the strength and resilience of the IIT Bombay community. Whether we are celebrating achievements or supporting each other through loss, our collective spirit ensures that we not only endure but thrive. Thank you for staying engaged and connected. Your involvement enriches our community, inspires our current students, and shapes the future of our beloved Institute.

Until we meet again next month, let’s continue to inspire and uplift each other, and keep the legacy of IIT Bombay vibrant and strong.

Warmly,
