12 May 2024

IIT Bombay triumphantly hosted its annual Commencement ceremony in the iconic Convocation Hall, celebrating a milestone event for its soon-to-be graduates. The ceremony was graced by Mr. Natarajan Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons, who delivered a compelling Commencement Address centered around the themes of Trust, Character, and Purpose.

In his address, Mr. Chandrasekaran emphasized the importance of cultivating trust, asserting its crucial role in career success. He explained, “When an organisation and its colleagues trust you, they empower and embrace you.” He also highlighted the significance of character, defined as the ability to prioritize values over instincts, which he believes is key to staying true to one’s principles. Concluding his speech, he touched on the role of purpose, which he described as both a guiding light and a source of fulfilment in one’s career.

During the event, Prof. Subhasis Chaudhuri, Director of IIT Bombay, presented the Institute’s Report for 2023-24. He proudly noted that IIT Bombay remains the top-ranked university in India and continues to excel on the global stage. Prof. Chaudhuri encouraged the graduating students to build upon the exceptional education they received at IIT Bombay, reminding them, “The quality of education you have received is unparalleled globally, but the responsibility to build upon that foundation is entirely yours.”

He also underscored the privilege of studying at such a prestigious Institute and the high expectations placed on graduates by the nation itself.

Commencement 2024 not only celebrated academic achievements but also served as a reminder of the graduates’ shared experiences and the collective journey at IIT Bombay. The ceremony, initiated last year, allows students to celebrate with their peers and families as they transition into the next chapter of their lives.

The afternoon session provided a special moment for approximately 2489 prospective graduates, including 1249 undergraduates, 1005 postgraduates, and 235 PhD candidates, who had the opportunity for a memorable photo with the Director on stage.

The event was attended by members of the Board of Governors, graduating students, and their families, and was broadcast live for extended friends and community to partake in this significant occasion.

IIT Bombay is confident that its graduates will not only meet the challenges of the future but will excel and redefine the boundaries of innovation and leadership.
