From the Dean's Desk May-2026

Dear Alumni,

As we continue to navigate a rapidly evolving global landscape, IIT Bombay remains committed to driving innovation, fostering collaboration, and strengthening its engagement with all of you. We are pleased to share a few highlights that reflect the Institute’s ongoing efforts across research, entrepreneurship, and community building.

IIT Bombay recently hosted the Bharat Innovates Deep-Tech Pre-Summit, bringing together leading startups, policymakers, and industry stakeholders. As a precursor to the international showcase in France, the event highlighted the strength of India’s deep-tech ecosystem and the Institute’s role in advancing innovation and global technological leadership.

Equally, our commitment to sustainable and impactful innovation is reflected on campus. At a time when global energy challenges are coming sharply into focus, the Living Lab initiative under GESH at IIT Bombay showcases how timely, homegrown innovation can make a tangible difference. By converting campus waste into clean cooking fuel, this effort has evolved into a scalable solution that reduces LPG use and emissions, reflecting the Institute’s ability to respond to real-world needs through persistent, application-driven research.

The spirit of giving back continues to define the IIT Bombay alumni community. The Class of 1999 pledged support to Infrastructural Legacy, the Student Flourishing Hub, and other Key Institute Initiatives, while the Class of 1966 have contributed to the Tinkerers’ Lab and Financial Aid Programme for Students, and together, they have reinforced a shared commitment across generations to strengthen the Institute’s future.

Complementing these efforts, our industry partnerships continue to expand the frontiers of research and application. IIT Bombay has partnered with Deloitte India to launch the Quantum Centre of Disruption for Enterprises (QCoDE) at the IIT Bombay Research Park. This initiative brings together research and industry expertise to accelerate real-world applications in quantum technologies, marking a significant step in advancing India’s quantum ecosystem.

I am pleased to announce that, as part of an ongoing series beginning this month, we will be highlighting the Institute’s academic departments to showcase their research, achievements, and contributions, while fostering stronger engagement with the alumni community. We begin this series with an in-depth look at the Department of Civil Engineering.

As always, you’ll also find our regular features, including Centres of Excellence, Lecture Series, Research Spotlight, Faculty Accolades, Student Success Stories, other Institute News and Highlights, Upcoming Events, and more in this month’s newsletter.

I invite you to engage with a few initiatives that are shaping our community’s future. The Dean ACR Annual Report 2024–25 offers a snapshot of what we have accomplished together this past year. And as part of Giving Back, please consider contributing to our WINGS Scholarship and GO-IITB Hostels campaigns. Each of these efforts reflects the generosity and shared commitment that make our alumni network strong.

Finally, I also invite members of our alumni community to follow our social media channels including the Dean ACR LinkedIn, X, and Facebook pages where regular updates are shared on alumni engagement and campus activities.

We look forward to staying connected with you and sharing more updates on the Institute’s progress in the months ahead. Your continued engagement remains invaluable to us.

Warmly,

Prof. Upendra V. Bhandarkar
