IIT Bombay Announces Final Candidates for the Summer Program for Undergraduate Research in Sustainability (SPURS)

IIT Bombay is delighted to welcome the final candidates of the Summer Program for Undergraduate Research in Sustainability (SPURS) 2026, an initiative for IITB undergraduates that is supported by its esteemed IITB alumni, Dr. Vinaya Kapoor (B.Tech., Chemical Engineering, 1992) and Dr. Samir Kapoor (B.Tech., Electrical Engineering, 1992).
The selected students and their respective projects include:
– Mr. Sarthak Somani from Economics will work with Prof. Karthikeyan Lanka on the summer project titled Deep Learning–Based Forecasting of Agricultural Droughts over India.
– Mr. Moksh Desai from Environmental Science and Engineering will work with Prof. Angshuman Modak on What Leads to Wintertime Fog over Northern India?
– Ms. Oditi Rathi from Civil Engineering will work with Prof. Vishal Dixit on Chasing Storms: Does Longevity Drive India’s Extreme Rain?
– Ms. Gargi Joshi from Engineering Physics will work with Prof. Akshaya Nikumbh on Tracking Algorithm for Precursors of Extreme Weather Events.

IIT Bombay Racing Showcases India’s First Driverless Formula Student Car at Formula Bharat 2026

The IIT Bombay Racing Team made a landmark impact at Formula Bharat 2026, achieving an outstanding 3rd Overall Finish while also securing 1st position in the Static Events category. Formula Bharat, India’s premier Formula Student competition, brings together top engineering institutions from across the nation to design, build, and validate high-performance formula-style race cars. The Institute’s accomplishment highlights the team’s continued excellence in engineering design and technical innovation, reinforcing its position among India’s leading student motorsport teams.

Beyond competitive success, IIT Bombay Racing set a historic milestone for Indian Formula Student teams by unveiling India’s first Driverless Formula Student car at the event. The showcase represented a significant step forward for autonomous vehicle development within the country’s student engineering ecosystem and demonstrated the team’s commitment to pushing technological boundaries beyond conventional racing formats.

Dr. Tanmoy Das Ranks First in the National Institute of Disaster Management’s Best PhD Thesis Ranking for 2025-26

It was a proud moment for IIT Bombay when Dr. Tanmoy Das (PhD, Civil Engineering, 2025), a former doctoral scholar of IITB’s Prof. Deepankar Choudhury, secured the First Position in the Best PhD Thesis ranking for F.Y. 2025–26, as announced by the National Institute of Disaster Management under the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India. His award-winning thesis, titled Analysis of Landslide Triggering Mechanisms under Rainfall and Earthquake Conditions Considering Parametric Uncertainties, reflects significant contributions to landslide disaster mitigation and management. Dr. Das is currently pursuing postdoctoral research at the University of Technology Sydney, Australia, further advancing his work in this critical field.

IIT Bombay Scholar, Sonali Singh, Shines at Global Biodiversity Conference

IIT Bombay is delighted to share that Ms. Sonali Singh, a PhD scholar from the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS), secured first prize in the Cultural Activity category (theme: Biodiversity for Life: Skilling Youth for a Green Future) at the International Youth Biodiversity Conference 2026, organised by the Telangana Biodiversity Board. She also won second place in the Videography category and received a recognition badge from the World Wide Fund for Nature for securing the top rank.
