From the Dean's Desk June-2026

Dear Alumni,

As we welcome June, I hope this message finds you well and connected to the spirit of IIT Bombay wherever you may be. Each month brings new milestones, achievements, and opportunities. In this edition, we celebrate moments of transition, innovation, global engagement, and the enduring culture of giving back that defines IIT Bombay.

Alumni giving remains one of the strongest pillars of IIT Bombay’s continued growth. Contributions from alumni are not only acts of generosity, but also reflections of gratitude, legacy, and enduring connection to the Institute. The dedication of Lecture Hall 101 by Mr. Partha Sarathi Sharma to his grandfather beautifully captures this spirit of giving back with purpose and meaning.

It has been a busy and exciting few months for the IIT Bombay alumni community, with several initiatives strengthening engagement across regions and generations. Recent highlights include the Nashik Alumni Connect, engagement with the US Consulate in New York on emerging technologies, and the launch of the South Florida Alumni Chapter, all of which reflect the growing reach and impact of IIT Bombay alumni worldwide. Alongside these, ongoing initiatives such as the Alumni TimeBank and the Lumina: Lighting Her Path lecture series continue to create meaningful opportunities for connection, mentorship, and learning, with recent sessions featuring alumnae Ms. Sujata Salem and Ms. Garima Bhatia. We look forward to bringing you detailed coverage of these initiatives and events in our July issue.

This month’s faculty spotlight features Prof. Sudesh Balan, whose work exploring AI-driven filmmaking through the short film Meghna reflects the exciting intersections of technology, creativity, and storytelling emerging at the Institute today.

The close of the academic year brought with it two of IIT Bombay’s most cherished traditions: Commencement 2026 and the Institute Valedictory Function (Valfi) 2026. For generations of IIT Bombay alumni, these ceremonies mark unforgettable milestones, celebrating achievement, friendship, and the transition from campus life to the journeys that lie ahead. This year’s events were no different, bringing together students, faculty, families, and the wider IIT Bombay community in moments of pride and reflection. We look forward to sharing detailed coverage, highlights, and photographs from both celebrations in our July issue.

As we look ahead to July, I am delighted to share that we will be welcoming back our Class of 1971 for their reunion. These gatherings are a wonderful celebration of lifelong friendships and shared memories, and I look forward to reconnecting with many of our alumni on this special occasion.

I invite you to engage with a few initiatives that are shaping our community’s future. The Dean ACR Annual Report 2024–25 offers a snapshot of what we have accomplished together this past year. And as part of Giving Back, please consider contributing to our GO-IITB Scholarships and Growth India Telescope campaigns. Each of these efforts reflects the generosity and shared commitment that make our alumni network strong.

Our alumni continue to find creative ways to strengthen the bonds of our community, and I invite you to explore this alumni-founded Souvenir Store that brings a touch of IIT Bombay into everyday life.

Finally, I also invite members of our alumni community to follow our social media channels, including the Dean ACR LinkedInX, and Facebook pages, where regular updates are shared on alumni engagement and campus activities.

As always, your continued engagement and support remain central to IIT Bombay’s progress and aspirations. Whether through mentorship, collaboration, philanthropy, or staying connected, every contribution strengthens this lifelong community. Thank you for being an integral part of the IIT Bombay journey.

Warmly,

Prof. Upendra V. Bhandarkar
