An IIT Bombay study—How New Metro Lines Shape a Sustainable Future: A Before-After Study of Travel Behaviour, Perceptions, and Emissions in MMR—conducted three months after the launch of Mumbai’s Metro Lines 2A and 7, revealed significant improvements in commute times, rider satisfaction, and air quality, though a shift away from private car use remains limited. Led by PhD scholar Abhijna M and professors K. V. Krishna Rao and Vedagiri Perumal from the Department of Civil Engineering, the study analyses how new transit infrastructure is shaping commuter behavior and perceptions across Mumbai’s western suburbs.
