Dear Fellow Alumnus,

Greetings from your alma mater! As the month of August unfolds its vibrant hues and bids farewell to summer, it brings a sense of reflection and renewal. The poet William Blake once said, “August, the summer’s last stand.” This month has indeed been a testament to our enduring commitment to excellence and innovation.

I am pleased to share some key highlights from August 2024 that showcase the dynamic spirit of IIT Bombay.

One of the most memorable moments in August was the visit of our distinguished alumnus, Mr. Nandan Nilekani. Nearly a year after his generous and impactful donation of Rs. 315 Crores (USD 38.5 Million), Nandan returned to his beloved alma mater to witness the transformative impact of his contribution. His visit underscored the profound connection between our alumni and the Institute and demonstrated how their support drives advancements across diverse research areas, from semiconductor technologies to biosciences. For more details on Nandan’s visit, please refer to the Legacy of Excellence section of the newsletter.

We celebrated Teacher’s Day on September 5th by commemorating the birth anniversary of India’s legendary philosopher and statesman, Dr. S. Radhakrishnan. The Institute paid tribute to the invaluable contributions of our educators, honouring their dedication, knowledge, and unwavering commitment to shaping future generations. We will provide extensive coverage of the day’s events and provide a detailed report on how IIT Bombay continues to recognize and celebrate the transformative power of education in our October newsletter.

I am delighted to announce that the Ministry of Education’s National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2024 ranked us 3rd overall, a testament to our continued dedication to academic excellence and research. Please look for more details in the Legacy of Excellence section of the newsletter.

Our global outreach was further strengthened with the Japan Alumni Connect 2024, where IIT Bombay’s leadership engaged meaningfully with our alumni in Hiroshima, Kyoto, and Tokyo. This initiative emphasized the critical role our international alumni play in advancing our global presence and influence. We have more for you in our Special Report in the newsletter.

We also had the pleasure of hosting the Mumbai Alumni Connect 2024. This gathering, held just a few days ago, was a vibrant celebration of our alumni community’s strength and influence in the region. The event facilitated meaningful discussions and reinforced the powerful bond between our alumni and the Institute. Please look for a detailed Special Report on this event in the newsletter.

We continue to collaborate meaningfully with corporates as evidenced by the launch of the Kotak Kanya-IIT Bombay Scholarship. This new partnership with the Kotak Education Foundation is set to empower talented women from underserved communities, reflecting our shared commitment to promoting gender equality and educational access. Please look for details in the Corporate Collaboration section in the newsletter.

Our faculty continue to make us proud! Both Prof. Rohit Srivastava and Prof. Vikram Vishal received prestigious national honours for their outstanding contributions to science and technology. Their recognition highlights the calibre of expertise within our faculty and we have featured more of their prestigious accolades in the Faculty Spotlight section of the newsletter.

I am also delighted to announce that IIT Bombay has been honoured with a bouquet of prestigious INAE awards and fellowships. Several of our esteemed faculty members, distinguished alumni, former Chairman, BoG, IIT Bombay, and a YAAA recipient have been INAE Fellows and an INAE Young Associate. These accolades underscore our Institute’s commitment to excellence and the outstanding contributions of our community to the field of engineering. Please look for details in the Institute Highlights section of the newsletter.

Our distinguished alumni, Dr. Vinaya Kapoor and Dr. Samir Kapoor are leading transformative efforts with the ACCESS Awards 2024, the Summer Program for Undergraduate Research in Sustainability (SPURS), and the groundbreaking Chair Professorship in Climate Studies. Their visionary contributions are not only fuelling innovation and supporting cutting-edge research but also exemplifying the profound impact our alumni have on advancing global sustainability. We also have all of our other regular articles including Faculty Accolades, Institute Highlights, Upcoming Events, and more in this month’s newsletter.

As we embrace the opportunities and challenges ahead, let us channel the energy and success of August to drive forward our shared vision of excellence. Together, let us continue to build on our legacy of innovation, elevate our impact, and strive for new horizons in the pursuit of knowledge and progress.
