The Central Library of IIT Bombay celebrated National Librarian’s Day on campus to mark the 133rd birth anniversary of Dr. S. R. Ranganathan, the Father of Library Science in India. Prof. Shireesh Kedare, Director, IIT Bombay, welcomed the Chief Guest, Dr. Jagdish Arora, who delivered a keynote address on “Beyond Books and Journals: Role of AI in the Future of Academic Libraries.” Dr. Arora highlighted how AI is transforming libraries through smarter discovery, virtual assistants, automated cataloguing, robotics, and large-scale digitisation—while reaffirming that the mission of libraries remains connecting people with knowledge.

Central Library Holds Book Exhibition 2025
The Central Library at IIT Bombay inaugurated its Book, e-Book, and e-Resources Exhibition-cum-Sale 2025 in the Library Conference Hall. The event was graced by:

In his welcome address, Dr. Naika highlighted that the exhibition is an annual celebration of knowledge and reading. This year, 14 publishers, vendors, and distributors showcased a wide range of books and e-resources spanning Engineering, Sciences, Technology, Management, Humanities, Arts, Literature, Children’s Books, and Biographies. He emphasized its role in promoting reading habits and providing the IIT Bombay community with access to the latest academic and general resources.
Prof. Nand Kishore stressed the importance of inclusive collections that support research, teaching, and administrative needs, while also preserving archives and highlighting works authored by IIT Bombay scholars. Prof. Chelakkot appreciated the library’s efforts in connecting publishers with users, and Mr. Bhorkade encouraged the IIT Bombay community to actively participate.
The exhibition underscored IIT Bombay’s commitment to fostering a vibrant academic and intellectual culture, providing students, faculty, and staff with access to cutting-edge resources, and promoting a lifelong love for learning across disciplines.

IIT Bombay observed the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan (International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking), a national initiative by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India, the Nodal Ministry for Drug Demand Reduction, focused on achieving a drug-free India. This flagship campaign aims to spread awareness about the dangers of substance abuse among the citizens.
Dr. Shilpa Adarkar, Additional Professor at Seth GSMC and KEM Hospital, an expert in psychiatry and addiction medicine with over 27 years of experience, delivered the keynote address themed “Get High on Life, Not on Drugs” during the event. The keynote aimed to build awareness, dispel myths, and encourage sensitive conversations around substance use and mental health, as part of the Institute’s Mission–Drug Free Campus. In her address, she emphasized viewing addiction as a health condition.
Highlights of the session included:
Insights into brain functioning, substance dependence, and stages of vulnerability.
Early identification and timely intervention strategies, especially relevant in academic settings.
Clarification of myths and misconceptions through scientific evidence and case studies.
Practical approaches to treatment, recovery, and relapse prevention.
The role of empathy, family, and community support in overcoming addiction.
The event concluded with an engaging Q&A, where participants discussed peer influence, family support, and sustainable prevention methods.

IIT Bombay Celebrates National Sports Day
IIT Bombay celebrated National Sports Day on campus with a vibrant line-up of events organised by the Institute’s Sports Council. In line with the theme एक घंटा खेल के मैदान में (Ek Ghanta Khel Ke Maidan Mein), the day brought together students, faculty, and sports enthusiasts to promote the spirit of fitness, teamwork, and active lifestyles through a series of engaging activities across multiple sports. These included:
Kabaddi workshop: Introducing participants to techniques and strategies of the traditional sport.
3v3 Basketball Tournament: Fostering mixed gender sports on the court.
Mixed Hockey League: Encouraging inclusivity and teamwork in a fast-paced format.
Wall Slam in Lawn Tennis: Testing endurance and precision among players.
Body Composition Camp: Offering BMI, fat percentage, and health screenings to promote physical awareness, along with guidance on improving them.
A standout moment of the celebrations was the partnership with Red Bull, which brought Indian badminton star Mr. Lakshya Sen to campus. He gave an inspiring talk to students and showcased his skills in an exhibition match against IIT Bombay’s Inter-IIT badminton team, captivating the audience.
The strong turnout across events highlighted the rising recognition of sports as a vital part of a balanced lifestyle, a spirit that IIT Bombay actively champions on campus. Dr. Sukanta Majumdar, the Hon’ble Minister of State for Education and Development of North Eastern Region, Government of India, visited IIT Bombay, where he was welcomed by Prof. Milind Atrey, Deputy Director (Academics, Research and Translation).
Prof. Makarand Kulkarni, Professor-in-Charge of the Centre for Defence Technology Innovations and Strategies (CDTIS), briefed Dr. Majumdar on this new initiative. He highlighted its research verticals, aligned with the deep tech needs of the armed forces, and its educational programmes explicitly connecting these needs with defence manufacturing.
This was followed by a presentation by Prof. Swaroop Ganguly on SemiX, the Centre for Semiconductor Technologies, at IIT Bombay. Prof. Ganguly briefed the Minister on the upcoming state-of-the-art semiconductor ‘fab lab’ infrastructure and the development of the Semiconductor Ecosystem Talent (DevSET) national roadmap for semiconductor research and education, being coordinated by IIT Bombay along with academic and industry partners pan-India.
Dr. Majumdar appreciated the efforts being taken by IIT Bombay and wished the functionaries all the best.
The visit reaffirmed IIT Bombay’s commitment to advancing deep tech research, fostering industry-academia collaborations, and contributing to national priorities in defence and semiconductor technologies.

The Young Faculty Fellowship (YFF) wields a substantial and long-lasting impact on IIT Bombay’s faculty profile. It plays a pivotal role in offering competitive packages and cultivating an environment that appeals to top-tier faculty. IIT Bombay hosted Mr. Koji Yagi, Consul General of Japan in Mumbai, and Ms. Megumi Hamuro, Culture and Information Consul, on campus.
The delegation engaged with faculty and leadership across several strategic initiatives, including the IIT Bombay Research Park, the Society for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (SINE), Japanese-connected start-ups incubated under SINE, the Semiconductor Research Group, the Technology Innovation Hub, and the Disaster Management Team.
The visit centred around the strengthening of Indo–Japan collaboration in research, innovation, and academia–industry partnerships.

IIT Bombay and the Ministry of Education, Ethiopia, Forge Partnership
IIT Bombay and the Ministry of Education, Ethiopia, have partnered to jointly offer the Multidisciplinary International Quality Improvement Doctoral Degree Programme (MIQMDDP). This collaboration will provide Ethiopian scholars with an exceptional opportunity to pursue a Ph.D. through a unique academic exchange between the two esteemed institutions.
Under the terms of the agreement, students will be admitted to Ph.D. programmes and benefit from joint supervision by faculty members from both partner institutions. Scholars will spend a minimum of 12 to 18 months conducting research at the partner institution, thus fostering a rich exchange of ideas and cultural experiences.
The agreement aims to enhance innovation and academic ties between India and Ethiopia, offering high-quality, internationally recognized doctoral education. This partnership will support the academic and professional growth of students from both countries, ensuring a lasting impact on the educational landscape.

IIT Bombay’s IRCC Hosts Industry Day on Indoor Air Quality Management
The Industrial Research and Consultancy Centre (IRCC) at IIT Bombay celebrated Industry Day by focusing on Indoor Air Quality Management (IAQM). The event showcased ongoing research in key areas such as IoT-based sensor networks, computational fluid dynamics, regulatory frameworks related to IAQ, and the development of full-scale testbeds for real-world experimentation.
Bringing together academic researchers, industry professionals, and end-users, the day fostered an environment of open dialogue and collaborative knowledge exchange. Highlights included a series of technical and industry presentations, engaging panel discussions, and guided lab tours in related domains.
A dedicated session also introduced participants to IIT Bombay’s industry collaboration mechanisms, outlining various ways in which companies could partner with the Institute to advance R&D initiatives. The event was well-attended and highly appreciated, with active participation from key stakeholders across the sector contributing to its overall success.

IIT Bombay Hosts 2025 International Summer School: A Celebration of Global Learning
The Office of International Relations at IIT Bombay hosted the 2025 International Summer School over two weeks in June and July 2025. The programme featured a series of one-week courses designed to offer international students focused academic experiences and exposure to cutting-edge research.
IIT Bombay welcomed 30 students in Week 1 and 51 students in Week 2, bringing the total to over 81 participants. Across both weeks, 11 interdisciplinary courses were offered on topics including continuous process intensification, financial derivatives, mechatronics, artificial intelligence, entrepreneurship, sustainability, energy data analytics, network security, and climate intelligence.
The cohort represented more than 24 universities across 16 countries, including Bangladesh, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Nepal, Oman, Russia, Singapore, Spain, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Taiwan, Thailand, the UK, and the USA. Institutions included KU Leuven, Technical University of Denmark, ESCP Business School, Politecnico di Milano, Kyoto University, Tohoku University, The University of Tokyo, Universiti Utara Malaysia, Birmingham City University, Dhofar University, Financial University, Universidade de Vigo, among others.
Outside the classroom, students explored Mumbai’s rich culture and engaged with the vibrant IIT Bombay campus community.
The 2025 Summer School reflects IIT Bombay’s commitment to academic excellence, cross-cultural exchange, and global engagement—and sets the stage for even broader participation in the years ahead.
IIT Bombay’s Department of Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science, along with the Office of International Relations, jointly organized a two-day faculty research workshop with the University of Tsukuba, Japan.
The workshop focused on Materials Innovation and Healthcare and brought together over 30 experts from both institutions for intensive discussions and knowledge exchange. The event featured two parallel thematic sessions covering a range of cutting-edge topics—from thermoelectric devices, atomic layer deposition techniques, and hydrogen storage to AI-powered medical imaging and wearable biosensors. In addition to technical presentations, the workshop included poster sessions, lab visits, and a panel discussion on student exchange and future collaboration.
Other events included a cultural dinner on Day 1 that celebrated Indo-Japanese camaraderie beyond the laboratory, while Day 2 concluded with strategic discussions and a roadmap for deepening the partnership.
This initiative not only facilitated meaningful research collaborations but also reaffirmed the shared commitment of both institutions to advancing global innovation through sustained academic engagement.
A high-level delegation from IIT Bombay visited the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), marking a significant step forward in the long-standing relationship between the two globally renowned institutions.
The visit was highlighted by the formal signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Prof. Shireesh Kedare, Director, IIT Bombay, and Prof. Rashid Bashir, Dean of the Grainger College of Engineering at UIUC. The agreement lays a strong foundation for cohort-based faculty and student exchanges, collaborative research and teaching, and shared access to academic resources and publications.
Commenting on the partnership, Prof. Kedare noted the importance of such a programme in fostering global perspectives among students and encouraging cross-cultural academic collaboration. Echoing this sentiment, Prof. John Coleman, Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at UIUC, underscored UIUC’s pride in partnering with IIT Bombay, describing the Institute as “an esteemed institution which has made such amazing contributions in a variety of engineering fields.”
The MoU also paves the way for future collaborative undergraduate initiatives, with a strong focus on entrepreneurship and research. “Opportunities are aplenty,” said Prof. Milind Atrey, Deputy Director (Academics, Research and Translation), “Both the institutes will benefit by such a collaborative arrangement.”
This visit reaffirmed IIT Bombay’s global academic footprint and its commitment to building strong, future-facing partnerships that nurture innovation, research, and cross-border knowledge exchange.
