IIT Bombay Welcomes the Consul General of Japan in Mumbai

IIT Bombay hosted Mr. Koji Yagi, Consul General of Japan in Mumbai, and Ms. Megumi Hamuro, Culture and Information Consul, on campus.

The delegation engaged with faculty and leadership across several strategic initiatives, including the IIT Bombay Research Park, the Society for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (SINE), Japanese-connected start-ups incubated under SINE, the Semiconductor Research Group, the Technology Innovation Hub, and the Disaster Management Team.

The visit centred around the strengthening of Indo–Japan collaboration in research, innovation, and academia–industry partnerships.

The Japanese emissaries’ visit concluded with a meeting with IIT Bombay’s senior leadership, highlighting ongoing and potential Indo-Japanese collaborations in technology, innovation, and sustainability.

IIT Bombay looks forward to building on this momentum and deepening its ties through meaningful partnerships between India and Japan.

IIT Bombay and the Ministry of Education, Ethiopia, Forge Partnership

 

IIT Bombay and the Ministry of Education, Ethiopia, have partnered to jointly offer the Multidisciplinary International Quality Improvement Doctoral Degree Programme (MIQMDDP). This collaboration will provide Ethiopian scholars with an exceptional opportunity to pursue a Ph.D. through a unique academic exchange between the two esteemed institutions.

Under the terms of the agreement, students will be admitted to Ph.D. programmes and benefit from joint supervision by faculty members from both partner institutions. Scholars will spend a minimum of 12 to 18 months conducting research at the partner institution, thus fostering a rich exchange of ideas and cultural experiences.

The agreement aims to enhance innovation and academic ties between India and Ethiopia, offering high-quality, internationally recognized doctoral education. This partnership will support the academic and professional growth of students from both countries, ensuring a lasting impact on the educational landscape.

IIT Bombay’s IRCC Hosts Industry Day on Indoor Air Quality Management

The Industrial Research and Consultancy Centre (IRCC) at IIT Bombay celebrated Industry Day by focusing on Indoor Air Quality Management (IAQM). The event showcased ongoing research in key areas such as IoT-based sensor networks, computational fluid dynamics, regulatory frameworks related to IAQ, and the development of full-scale testbeds for real-world experimentation.

Bringing together academic researchers, industry professionals, and end-users, the day fostered an environment of open dialogue and collaborative knowledge exchange. Highlights included a series of technical and industry presentations, engaging panel discussions, and guided lab tours in related domains.

A dedicated session also introduced participants to IIT Bombay’s industry collaboration mechanisms, outlining various ways in which companies could partner with the Institute to advance R&D initiatives. The event was well-attended and highly appreciated, with active participation from key stakeholders across the sector contributing to its overall success.

The event reinforced IIT Bombay’s commitment to fostering industry-academia collaboration in addressing critical environmental challenges.

IIT Bombay Hosts 2025 International Summer School: A Celebration of Global Learning

The Office of International Relations at IIT Bombay hosted the 2025 International Summer School over two weeks in June and July 2025. The programme featured a series of one-week courses designed to offer international students focused academic experiences and exposure to cutting-edge research.

IIT Bombay welcomed 30 students in Week 1 and 51 students in Week 2, bringing the total to over 81 participants. Across both weeks, 11 interdisciplinary courses were offered on topics including continuous process intensification, financial derivatives, mechatronics, artificial intelligence, entrepreneurship, sustainability, energy data analytics, network security, and climate intelligence.

The cohort represented more than 24 universities across 16 countries, including Bangladesh, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Nepal, Oman, Russia, Singapore, Spain, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Taiwan, Thailand, the UK, and the USA. Institutions included KU Leuven, Technical University of Denmark, ESCP Business School, Politecnico di Milano, Kyoto University, Tohoku University, The University of Tokyo, Universiti Utara Malaysia, Birmingham City University, Dhofar University, Financial University, Universidade de Vigo, among others.

Outside the classroom, students explored Mumbai’s rich culture and engaged with the vibrant IIT Bombay campus community.

The 2025 Summer School reflects IIT Bombay’s commitment to academic excellence, cross-cultural exchange, and global engagement—and sets the stage for even broader participation in the years ahead.

IIT Bombay and the University of Tsukuba Hold Research Workshop on Materials Innovation & Healthcare

IIT Bombay’s Department of Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science, along with the Office of International Relations, jointly organized a two-day faculty research workshop with the University of Tsukuba, Japan.

The workshop focused on Materials Innovation and Healthcare and brought together over 30 experts from both institutions for intensive discussions and knowledge exchange. The event featured two parallel thematic sessions covering a range of cutting-edge topics—from thermoelectric devices, atomic layer deposition techniques, and hydrogen storage to AI-powered medical imaging and wearable biosensors. In addition to technical presentations, the workshop included poster sessions, lab visits, and a panel discussion on student exchange and future collaboration.

Other events included a cultural dinner on Day 1 that celebrated Indo-Japanese camaraderie beyond the laboratory, while Day 2 concluded with strategic discussions and a roadmap for deepening the partnership.

This initiative not only facilitated meaningful research collaborations but also reaffirmed the shared commitment of both institutions to advancing global innovation through sustained academic engagement.

IIT Bombay Delegation Visits University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign

A high-level delegation from IIT Bombay visited the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), marking a significant step forward in the long-standing relationship between the two globally renowned institutions.

The visit was highlighted by the formal signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Prof. Shireesh Kedare, Director, IIT Bombay, and Prof. Rashid Bashir, Dean of the Grainger College of Engineering at UIUC. The agreement lays a strong foundation for cohort-based faculty and student exchanges, collaborative research and teaching, and shared access to academic resources and publications.

Commenting on the partnership, Prof. Kedare noted the importance of such a programme in fostering global perspectives among students and encouraging cross-cultural academic collaboration. Echoing this sentiment, Prof. John Coleman, Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at UIUC, underscored UIUC’s pride in partnering with IIT Bombay, describing the Institute as “an esteemed institution which has made such amazing contributions in a variety of engineering fields.”

The MoU also paves the way for future collaborative undergraduate initiatives, with a strong focus on entrepreneurship and research. “Opportunities are aplenty,” said Prof. Milind Atrey, Deputy Director (Academics, Research and Translation), “Both the institutes will benefit by such a collaborative arrangement.”

This visit reaffirmed IIT Bombay’s global academic footprint and its commitment to building strong, future-facing partnerships that nurture innovation, research, and cross-border knowledge exchange.

Faculty Accolades

IIT Bombay and Government of Maharashtra Sign MoU for Chief Minister Fellowship Programme (Batch 2025–26)

IIT Bombay, in collaboration with the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, the Hon’ble Shri Devendra Fadnavis, signed an MoU with the Planning Department, Government of Maharashtra, for the second batch of the Chief Minister Fellowship Programme. The MoU was signed and exchanged at Varsha Bungalow, the official residence of the Chief Minister. Prof. Shireesh Kedare, Director, IIT Bombay, was present at the occasion. The agreement outlines the launch of a certification course aimed at equipping Chief Minister Fellows with the right tools and methodologies to understand, articulate, and solve problems related to public welfare.

Other IIT Bombay dignitaries present at the MoU signing ceremony include:

  • Prof. Milind Atrey, Deputy Director, ART (Academics, Research and Translation)
  • Prof. Usha Ananthakumar, Dean (Educational Outreach)
  • Prof. Vinish Kathuria, Head, Ashank Desai Centre for Policy Studies (ADCPS)

The course will be coordinated by Prof. Parmeshwar Udmale from the Centre for Technology for Rural Areas (C-TARA), who serves as the PI/Course Coordinator for the second batch through the office of the Dean – Educational Outreach.

This year, 60 Fellows have been selected through a rigorous selection process that included a written exam and a personal interview. Fellows will attend in-person classes for four weeks at the Institute, interspersed with breaks and supported by continuous online instruction on weekends over 12 months. During this time, they will be posted across 23 district collectors and zilla parishad offices across Maharashtra. In addition to coursework, the Fellows will undertake directed research projects under the guidance of IIT Bombay faculty.

This collaboration underscores IIT Bombay’s ongoing commitment to strengthening governance and public policy through capacity building. By partnering with the Government of Maharashtra on the Chief Minister Fellowship Programme, the Institute brings academic rigor, data-driven thinking, and a multidisciplinary approach to some of the most pressing challenges in public administration.

Café Quantum Opens at Rahul Bajaj Technology and Innovation Centre

Prof. K. V. Krishna Rao, Deputy Director (FIA), and Prof. Milind Atrey, Deputy Director (ART), inaugurated the newly established Café Quantum on the 4th floor of the Rahul Bajaj Technology and Innovation Centre at IIT Bombay.

The event was attended by several IIT Bombay distinguished dignitaries, including:

IIT Bombay’s Campus School Wins Community Champions Award for Sustainability

Reflecting IIT Bombay’s deep commitment to environmental stewardship and social responsibility, the IIT Bombay Campus School and Junior College was honoured with the Community Champions Award at the Go Sharpener Sustainability Awards 2025, held at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Mumbai. This award recognizes the school’s outstanding grassroots efforts in promoting sustainability and nurturing environmentally conscious young leaders.

The achievement highlights how IIT Bombay’s ecosystem empowers future generations to lead with purpose and create meaningful impact beyond the campus.

IIT Bombay Marks International Yoga Day 2025 with Heartfulness and Holistic Wellness

IIT Bombay celebrated the 11th  International Day of Yoga with a series of thoughtfully curated events, reinforcing its commitment to the holistic well-being of its community.

On June 20, campus residents were introduced to the transformative practices of heartfulness meditation and yogic relaxation techniques. This flagship event, organized by Yogastha, IIT Bombay, was held in collaboration with My Bharat and the Commonwealth Youth Council of India.

Over 200 participants, including faculty, officers, staff, and students, attended the deeply engaging session. Prof. S.V. Kulkarni, former Dean (AA), and Mr. Ganesh Bhorkade, Registrar, graced the occasion.

The session was led by Dr. Nivedita Shreyans, a heartfulness trainer, who emphasized, “In a world driven by speed and intellect, it is the stillness of the heart that brings true strength.” After an hour-long interactive and guided meditation session, Dr. Shreyans remarked on the joy of seeing India’s brightest minds pause and reconnect with themselves.

Representatives from the Commonwealth Youth Council encouraged students to integrate heartfulness into their daily lives.

On June 21, IIT Bombay marked International Yoga Day with a vibrant celebration on campus. Mr. Dinesh Ghodke (International Wellness Expert, Former Director of Art of Living – Youth Programme, and IITB alumnus) was the Chief Guest. The event was attended by around 200 people, including:

    • Prof. Suryanarayana Doolla (Dean SA, IIT Bombay)
    • Prof. Atul Srivastava (Associate Dean SA, IIT Bombay)

Mr. Ghodke encouraged students to incorporate yoga into their daily routines for lasting mental and physical wellness. In the evening, many took on the yogathon challenge of performing 108 rounds of Suryanamaskar, with most completing it. The celebrations extended beyond the campus community, as students and teachers of KG School, Campus School, and PM Shri Kendriya Vidyalaya IIT Powai also marked the day with yoga sessions at their respective schools.

Mr. Ghodke also delivered a special talk titled “The Inner Startup: Yogic tools for mental resilience and emotional mastery,” covering:

  • The science of yoga and physical wellness
  • Tools to manage mental and emotional health
  • Techniques to boost focus, clarity, and productivity

By integrating ancient practices like yoga and meditation into campus life, IIT Bombay reaffirms its commitment to nurturing a culture of mindfulness, balance, and resilience. These celebrations embody the Institute’s belief that true excellence arises when mental, physical, and emotional well-being go hand in hand.
