IIT Bombay is dedicated to nurturing educational and research excellence through valuable talks delivered by industry experts for its students and faculty. As part of this commitment, the Institute proudly announces the forthcoming Girish Sant Lecture Series, slated for February 28, 2024, from 4:00 PM- 5:00 PM at the Lecture Hall 22, Victor Menezes Convention Centre, on campus. Established through a legacy donation by the class of 1986, this series pays tribute to their late batchmate, Girish Sant, an esteemed energy analyst and energy policy commentator. His analytical contributions played a pivotal role in shaping India’s energy policy throughout the 1990s and 2000s.
The lecture will be presented by Mr. Anshuman Lath, co-founder of Gram Oorja Solutions Private Limited, which works with remote communities, addressing their electricity, drinking water, and cooking fuel needs. Mr. Lath brings extensive experience working with the SME sector, rural development organizations, and the finance sector. He holds a BE from IIT Roorkee and a PGDM from IIM Bangalore.
Mr. Lath will enlighten our students and faculty on the topic of ‘Remote Village Energy Access: Experience, Challenges and Possibilities
Speaker Bio: Mr. Anshuman is a co-founder of Gram Oorja Solutions Private Limited. Founded in 2008, Gram Oorja works with remote communities, solving their electricity, drinking water and cooking fuel needs. With over 750 community scale projects including over 100 solar mini-grids, Gram Oorja has now impacted over 1.5 lakh lives in remote parts of India. More about the company on www.gramoorja.in
This series has been established through the generous contributions of our alumna Ms. Radhika Rajan (M.Tech., Physics, 1977), Executive Vice President at DSP Investments.
The lecture will be presented by Ms. Premlata Poonia, Founder of Hamari Laado. Ms. Poonia’s journey from the remote village of Likhmewala to leading a billion-dollar business in the US, and finally returning to her roots to empower young girls through Hamari Laado, is nothing short of extraordinary. Her lecture will delve into the trajectories of her academic and professional career, illustrating how each step paved the way for her mission – “Change, one girl at a time!”
This talk deeply resonates with IIT Bombay’s commitment to empowering women in STEM fields and encouraging their pursuit of excellence.

The ‘Gogri Hub for Membranes Research,’ a pivotal unit housed within the Translational Research Centre for Chemicals and Materials, is scheduled to be inaugurated in April.
Translational research epitomizes the forefront of innovation, acting as the vital bridge between academic breakthroughs and real-world applications. IIT Bombay is steadfastly dedicated to nurturing translational research endeavours that resonate with its overarching mission of fostering societal change and bolstering national development.

The Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) Facility, generously established by IITB Distinguished Alumnus, Mr. Raj Nair (Class of 1971) will be inaugurated on campus in April. This visionary contribution propels forward the translation of research findings into tangible healthcare solutions at IIT Bombay.
This state-of-the-art GMP Facility, nestled within the Biosciences and Bioengineering (BSBE) Building, represents the critical next step following translational research, enabling the production of small batches of products essential for human trials.

Announcing the upcoming lecture in IIT Bombay’s prestigious ‘NR Kamath Distinguished Lecture series!
This annual webinar honours the esteemed contributions of Prof. N.R. Kamath, former Deputy Director and Department Head of Chemical Engineering. The webinar is hosted by the Chemistry Department.
The lecture will be presented by Prof. Michael Klien, Laura H Carnell Professor of Science and Director of the Institute for Computational Molecular Science at Temple University, Philadelphia, USA. Prof. Klien was the recipient of the Aneesur Rahman prize in 1999, the highest honour conferred by the American Physical Society for his work in computational physics and became a member of the United States National Academy of Science in 2009. Most recently, he has earned the Sheikh Saud International Prize for Material Science in 2024 and the John Scott Medal & Award in 2020. Prof. Klien’s paper on Monte Carlo simulations in the Journal of Chemical physics has been cited over 35,000 times.
Prof. Klien, will share his expert insights on ‘Knots in Polymers.’ This piece discusses the impact of knots on polymers such as the ‘trefoil’ knot akin to an overhand knot on a rope.

The speaker for the upcoming talk is renowned economist and Padma Bhushan recipient, Prof. Kaushik Basu.
Prof. Basu is a Professor of Economics and the Carl Marks Professor of International Studies at Cornell University, and the Professor N.R Kamath Visiting Chair Professor at IIT Bombay. He was formerly Senior Vice President and Chief Economist of the World Bank. Prior to that, he was the Chief Economic Adviser to the Indian Government. Over the years, Prof. Basu has held visiting positions at the Institute for Advanced Study, the London School of Economics, Harvard University, Princeton University, and M.I.T.
Prof. Basu will speak about ‘India’s Unemployment Problem: Some Lessons from Economic Theory.’

IIT Bombay will host the latest lecture in the ‘Prof. N.R. Kamath Distinguished Institute Lecture’ series on campus. The series honours the leadership and contributions of Prof. N.R. Kamath, former Deputy Director, and founding head of the Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT Bombay, to the Institute.
The speaker for the upcoming talk is IITB Distinguished Alumnus, Dr. Arun Dravid, Chairman, Emeritus, Jacobs Engineering India Ltd. Dr. Dravid has also served for three years as an external member of the IIT Senate and has taught as a visiting faculty in the past at IIT Bombay and ICT in Mumbai.
Dr. Dravid was awarded the President of India Gold Medal for ranking first amongst all branches of IITs at the B.Tech. Examination in 1966. He then got his MS and Doctorate in Chemical Engineering from MIT, USA, in 1968 and 1970 respectively.
Apart from his long career at the world-renowned Jacobs Engineering India Ltd., Dr. Dravid has pursued a parallel career as an accomplished vocalist of the Jaipur-Atrauli gharana. His early training (1955-1961) was under the tutelage of the late Ustad Abdul Majid Khan Saheb (a disciple of the late Ustad Alladiya Khan who was doyen of the Jaipur-Atrauli Gharana). Dr. Dravid’s advanced training (1961-1966), and later intermittently (1976-1999), was from Gaanasaraswati Smt. Kishori Amonkar, who is one of the most cherished vocalists of the Jaipur Gharana. He also received occasional training from Gaanatapaswini late Smt. Mogubai Kurdikar, mother and Guru of Smt. Kishori Amonkar. He played the role of the music guru Pandit Vinayak Pradhan in the 2020 film The Disciple.
Dr. Dravid will speak on ‘Science Of Musical Notes: Sur And Shrutis.’
