From the Dean's Desk November-2025

Dear Alumni,

It was wonderful to meet so many of you during our recent U.S. Roadshow, where the IIT Bombay contingent visited four cities to connect with our vibrant alumni community and share the latest developments from campus.

In the meantime, I am delighted to share some of the key milestones from October 2025. IIT Bombay-led BharatGen secured nearly Rs. 1,000 crore to advance India’s SovereignAI initiative, building the next generation of AI on our campus in collaboration with premier institutes across the country. The Institute is also leading the ‘Daksha’ mission to develop and launch twin satellites equipped with the world’s most powerful space telescopes. For more, look at the National Initiatives section of this newsletter.

IIT Bombay celebrated Gandhi Jayanti and Shastri Jayanti on campus, as well as the National Engineers’ Day on September 15, 2025, by honouring Sir M. Visvesvaraya’s legacy. The Institute conferred several prestigious awards, including the International Award for Excellence in Research in Engineering and Technology, the C1973 Faculty Awards for Research Excellence, and the Dr. P.K. Patwardhan Technology Development Award and Outstanding Young Engineer Award. For more, check the Special Report section.

I am delighted to share that the Institute celebrated the launch of the WINGS Scholarship, backed by our Distinguished Alumnus, Mr. Bharat Desai, and Ms. Neerja Sethi, to empower women in STEM and break financial barriers. For more, see the Alumni Giving section. We also had the privilege of having an insightful conversation with our Distinguished Alumnus, Mr. D.C. Agrawal, in our “Chai Aur Samose Pe Charcha” series.

In more alumni news, IIT Bombay is proud to celebrate the extraordinary achievements of Prof. Rajesh N. Dave, Distinguished Alumnus and Visiting Faculty, who received the AIChE Lifetime Achievement Award, and Dr. Anu Raghunathan, Chief Scientist at the National Chemical Laboratory, who recently wowed audiences at TEDx Pune with her groundbreaking insights in synthetic biology. For more, check out our Alumni Spotlight section.

I encourage you to explore and engage with some of our key initiatives that continue to strengthen our IIT Bombay community. The newly launched Lumina – Lighting Her Path celebrates and supports our women alumni through mentorship, shared experiences, and professional networks. Revisit/download the Dean ACR Annual Report 2024–25, which highlights the many milestones made possible through your support, and consider contributing to the refurbishment of Hostel 4 on campus. Together, these initiatives reflect the spirit of giving, connection, and shared purpose that defines our alumni community.

As always, you’ll also find our regular features, including Faculty Spotlight, Lecture Series, Research Spotlight, Faculty Accolades, Institute News and Highlights, Upcoming Events, and more in this month’s newsletter.

As the year draws to a close, the Institute looks forward to welcoming many of you back to campus for your reunions and for Alumni Day on December 28, 2025. These occasions are a reminder of the enduring bonds that make IIT Bombay more than an institution; it is a lifelong community. Your continued engagement and encouragement remain our greatest strength as we work together to advance IIT Bombay’s mission of excellence and societal impact.

We can’t wait to celebrate those connections with you once again.

Warmly,

Prof. Upendra V. Bhandarkar
