Dear Alumnus:

Once again, it’s my honour and privilege to write to you and update you on the happenings at the Institute and at the Dean ACR office during the month of May 2023.

While our students are away enjoying their summer vacation, the warm weather, the blooming flowers, and the lush greenery all around campus have brought an undeniable sense of hope and a renewed sense of energy to campus. But, admittedly, we are eagerly awaiting the monsoons which will bring some cool relief to the scorching heat in the city.

As always, while the newsletter will take you through the myriad activities and significant impact stories from around the Institute, let me give you a quick update on some of the key events that took place/are coming up on campus last month.

IIT Bombay is hosting its now flagship annual event – the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) conclave on June 16, 2023, on campus. Our theme this year is ‘Technology for Development’ where we will look at the role that technology can play in the transformation of our communities, our cities, and our country. The Conclave will unveil how IIT Bombay has implemented effective technology initiatives, which are aligned with the national goal of achieving technological self-reliance and facilitating the “Make in India” movement.  Please look for more details in the Curtain Raiser section of the newsletter for more details on this year’s CSR Conclave.

In another crucial initiative, Shri Narendra Modi, our Honourable Prime Minister, initiated the Yuva Sangam programme under the ‘Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat’ (EBSB) campaign with the primary objective of strengthening interpersonal connections and fostering empathy amongst the youth of India. IIT Bombay was delighted to welcome a team of 45 ‘Yuva’ delegates from Dr. B.R. Ambedkar National Institute of Technology Jalandhar, Punjab, comprising 22  girls and 23  boys to campus. Over six days, IIT Bombay provided them with an immersive and multidimensional experience of our campus and the city of Mumbai. Please look for a detailed Special Report and several pictures of the same in the newsletter.

Join me in congratulating our own alumna and visiting professor at IIT Bombay, Dr. Urmila Diwekar (M.Tech., 1984 and Ph.D. 1988, Chemical Engineering) who won the Innovative Applications in Analytics Award that is given annually by the Analytics Society of INFORMS for her work in the field of In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF). What an outstanding honour! Please look for more details on Dr. Diwekar in the Alumni Accolade section of the newsletter.

Hearty congratulations to our alumnus, Mr. Ash Abhyankar (B.Tech., Electrical Engineering, 1965) who was recognised by the National Association of Electrical Distributors and Manufacturers (NAED) with an Honorary Lifetime Achievement Award. More details on his accomplishment are in the Alumni Accolade section of the newsletter.

Please also join me in commending the excellent work done by our IITB professors who continue to bring accolades to themselves and the Institute. Please look for more details under Faculty Accolades in the News section of the newsletter.

We also have all of our other regular articles including Giving, Chair Professorships, Student Success Stories, Alumni News, Institute Highlights, Upcoming Events, and more in this month’s newsletter.

As always, I am delighted at the impact that you and the rest of our alumni community are making in the world. From pursuing groundbreaking research, constantly innovating and evolving, providing transformative leadership, and/or working in service of your communities – all of you continue to make your alma mater proud. As we move forward, join me in celebrating the benevolent impact that the Institute has already made on all of us and rejoice in the leadership role it continues to take toward nation-building and the limitless possibilities of the future.

I look forward to meeting you and urge you to drop by and visit us the next time you are in Mumbai.

Sincerely,
