From the Dean's Desk November-2024

Dear Fellow Alumnus,

As the glow of Diwali illuminates homes across India and the world, it fills our hearts with hope, joy, and renewal. The festival of lights, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil, reminds us of the endless possibilities ahead and the strength of our shared bonds.

On behalf of IIT Bombay, I wish you a prosperous Diwali and a festive season that is filled with light, peace, and happiness.

With this spirit of renewal, I’m delighted to share key updates from our campus and alumni community as part of this edition of the Dean ACR newsletter. Our vibrant Institute continues to evolve, and it’s your ongoing connection that fuels our momentum forward.

In recent months, we’ve celebrated many milestones. Our UAE Alumni Connect event was a special opportunity to reunite with cherished friends and relive the spirit of IIT Bombay. These reunions are a testament to the lasting bonds that unite us, no matter where we are in the world. Please look for more in the Special Report section of the newsletter.

This month we had a wonderful conversation with one of our own in the popular Chai Aur Samose Pe Charcha series. In this edition, we spotlight Mr. Rameshwar Kumar Maini, whose journey from the vibrant corridors of IIT Bombay to building a remarkable legacy at Zentech Technical Services is both inspiring and uplifting. His story exemplifies the spirit of perseverance and innovation, values we hold dear at IIT Bombay.

In more alumni news – our very own Prof. Mayuresh V. Kothare, has recently been appointed Associate Dean for Research in the P.C. Rossin College of Engineering and Applied Science at Lehigh University. Congratulations to him!

IIT Bombay is also deeply grateful to three of our alumni who gave back to their alma mater. They include Mr. Deepak Satwalekar, Mr. Arjun Raju Raghavan, and Mr. Lalit Keshre. You can read more about the causes they donated to in the Alumni Giving section of the newsletter.

IIT Bombay has made significant strides in research and development, thanks to new corporate partnerships like our collaboration with ABB India. This has resulted in a cutting-edge Electrical Machines and Drives Lab for our Department of Energy Science and Engineering. You can get more details on this partnership in the Corporate Collaboration section of the newsletter.

We recently inaugurated the A91 Eco Hub, a world-class facility that is helping shape the next generation of leaders in economics, one of our fastest-growing fields. We have more details on the launch in a Special Report in the newsletter.

I am delighted to announce that NCF Green Energy Pvt Ltd, an innovative venture connected to IIT Bombay, has been honoured as NASSCOM’s prestigious ‘League of 10’ winner at the Emerge 50 Awards 2024. IIT Bombay also announced the winners of the ACCESS 2024 (ACcelerating Climate, Energy and Sustainability Solutions) Awards Initiative supported by our very own dedicated alumni Vinaya Kapoor (B.Tech., Chemical Engineering, 1992) and Dr. Samir Kapoor (B.Tech., Electrical Engineering, 1992). For more details on these wins, check out the Institute Highlights section in the newsletter.

IIT Bombay has inaugurated its much-anticipated souvenir shop in the Gulmohar building. This new space not only offers a selection of IIT Bombay-branded merchandise and memorabilia but also serves as a heartfelt reminder of the cherished memories and lasting legacy we all share as part of this vibrant community. We warmly invite you to visit the store during your next trip to campus and take a piece of IIT Bombay home with you.

IIT Bombay continues to support the holistic growth of its student community and to that end, we were privileged to host the US Surgeon General, Dr. Vivek Murthy, on World Mental Health Day. His inspiring talk on mental well-being resonated deeply and reminded us all of the importance of caring for both mind and body. To learn more about the visit and his conversation with Ms. Ira Khan, Founder, Agatsyu Foundation, look for the Holistic Campus Initiatives section of the newsletter.

Sadly, we also reflect on the passing of Shri Ratan Tata, a titan of industry and philanthropy whose impact on IIT Bombay and the world will forever inspire future generations.

As always, we have all our regular coverage of campus-related activities under Institute Highlights, Student Success Stories, Faculty Spotlights and Accolades, Upcoming Events, and much more.

Finally, IIT Bombay is abuzz with anticipation as we prepare for a series of unforgettable alumni reunions in the coming months. My heartfelt request to our alumni from the classes of 2014, 2010, 2009, 2008, 1999, 1975, 1974, 1965, 1964, and 1963 is that this is your chance to reconnect, reminisce, and relive the golden days of your time at your alma mater. So rally your batchmates, and register for your reunion today. Detailed information on each of these reunions can be found in the Upcoming Alumni Meets section in the newsletter.

As we celebrate the festive season and the enduring legacy of IIT Bombay, I want to thank you—our alumni and supporters—for your ongoing commitment to our Institute’s success. Your engagement and generosity are the foundation of our continued excellence, and together, we can ensure that IIT Bombay remains at the forefront of invention, research, and opportunity.

Once again, I hope you had a festive and joyous Diwali, and my best wishes for a wonderful year ahead.
