Dear Alumnus/Alumna,

“The pain of parting is nothing to the joy of meeting again.”
                                                                — Charles Dickens

These sentiments flood my mind after every trip that I take to meet all of you in the fellow alumni community. Having just visited several of you in North America, I also feel that nothing has changed in your sense of belonging to the IITB ethos… the fun and frolic, the camaraderie and joy of being in each others midst. I feel particularly nostalgic when I see the hubbub of activity around campus – whether in the corridors of the Institute or in the buzzing cafeterias where dreams are nurtured over endless cups of chai and samosas. As I found out talking to many of you in the US in October, it was the same for all of us during our time on campus even as it is the same now for the younger generation – for IIT Bombay continues to be a melting pot of intellect and creativity.

Speaking of chai and samosas, join us on a nostalgic journey down memory lane with our newest series in the newsletter called, “Conversations over Chai and Samosa.” Each month we will let one of our alumni members relive the camaraderie, laughter, and magic of their life at IIT Bombay. I hope the series will bring back fond memories of your time at the Institute even as I encourage you to write to us about your own memories of having crispy samosas and cups of piping hot chai at your alma mater.

As always, October was a very hectic month for the Dean ACR office.

As I mentioned above, a team from the Institute travelled for our US Roadshow trip in October.
We rekindled our connections with our cherished alumni, and amidst shared laughter and nostalgic remembrances, we reflected on the transformative impact of IIT Bombay on all of our lives. As the Institute aspires to realize its ambitious 2030 vision of becoming a global academic leader in science and technology, your support is critical. We hope that the fond memories and enthusiasm kindled during these meetings will translate into tangible support for your beloved alma mater, propelling us toward our shared vision of excellence and innovation. Look for a detailed report on our visit in the December 2023 edition of the newsletter. My special words of appreciation are for all the HF board members and the chapters for their meticulous planning, enthusiastic support and welcome, and the countless hours of voluntary effort that they put into making these events so joyous for all of us.

October also saw the signing of MoUs with Synopsys to set up the Synopsys Semiconductor Lab for Virtual Fab Solutions and Jindal Steel to set up a prestigious Chair Professorship at the Institute. We also launched the INOX Cryogenics Lab on campus. Look out for Special Reports and News stories on these events in the newsletter.

I’d like to take a quick moment and congratulate Prof. Chetan Solanki and our student, Amreen Khan. Both are repeat offenders! And by that, both have already brought accolades to the Institute but they continue to dream big and achieve even bigger. Look for their latest accomplishments in the section Continuing IITB’s Legacy of Excellence.

As always, we have all of our other regular articles including Student Success Stories, Faculty Accolades, Institute News and Highlights, Upcoming Events, and more in this month’s newsletter.

I want to finish by saying that we deeply value the enduring bond between our alumni and the Institute. This synergy between our past and present is a testament to the strength of our community. Together, we can shape the future of our Institute, ensuring its growth, excellence, and continued impact. Your support, whether through your time, expertise, or resources, is instrumental in fostering positive change.

I eagerly look forward to the journey ahead, united by our shared commitment to the betterment of our beloved IIT Bombay. Please accept my greetings and best wishes to you and your family for a happy and joyous festival of lights. On this auspicious and sparkling festival of lights, may the glow of lamps illuminate your life and bring you lots of joy, peace, prosperity, togetherness, and happiness.

Sincerely,
