From the Dean's Desk March-2026

Dear Alumni,

As we move through the month of March, it is a good moment to reflect on the many milestones, reunions, and achievements that have brought the IIT Bombay community together in recent months. Together, these moments have reaffirmed the shared purpose that defines our Institute: advancing knowledge, nurturing talent, and contributing meaningfully to the nation and society.

Joyful reconnections have marked the past few months as we welcomed back alumni and faculty for a series of reunions. The Classes of 1966 and 1976 returned to relive memories and celebrate lifelong friendships. The Lifelong Faculty Meet offered a meaningful opportunity to honour the educators who have shaped the Institute’s journey. These gatherings beautifully reaffirmed the enduring bonds that make IIT Bombay more than an institution—it is a lifelong community.

Our culture of giving back remains a cornerstone of that community spirit. We are deeply grateful to our alumni for their generous contributions. And the launch of the Alumni TimeBank further expands opportunities for alumni to contribute their time and expertise, creating more avenues for mentorship and engagement. We are also delighted to spotlight our alumnus, Mr. Anand Garde, who received the H.R. Russ Ogden Award and an Award of Appreciation from ASTM International.

We are also pleased to honour the spirit of achievement of our alumni community as we conferred the Distinguished Alumnus/Alumna Awards (DAA) and the Young Alumnus/Alumna Achiever Awards (YAAA) 2026 on Foundation Day. These awards recognise individuals whose accomplishments exemplify excellence and serve as a powerful source of inspiration for current and future generations of the IIT Bombay fraternity, reminding us all of the enduring impact of an IIT Bombay education. We will feature a detailed write-up of Foundation Day in our next issue.

At the same time, our collaborations with industry continue to deepen the impact of our work. Partnerships with Hindustan Colas Private Limited (HINCOL) to support research in pavement engineering, and with Hudson River Trading (HRTI) to establish the IIT Bombay–HRTI Centre of Excellence, demonstrate how academic insight and industry experience can come together to address real-world challenges and create lasting value.

As always, you’ll also find our regular features, including Centres of Excellence, Lecture Series, Research Spotlight, Faculty Accolades, Student Success Stories, other Institute News and Highlights, Upcoming Events, and more in this month’s newsletter.

I invite you to engage with a few initiatives that are shaping our community’s future. The Dean ACR Annual Report 2024–25 offers a snapshot of what we have accomplished together this past year. And as part of Giving Back, please consider contributing to our WINGS Scholarship and the Young Faculty Fellowship campaigns. Each of these efforts reflects the generosity and shared commitment that make our alumni network strong.

Finally, I also invite members of our alumni community to follow the Dean ACR LinkedIn page, where regular updates are shared on alumni engagement and activities taking place on campus.

At its heart, IIT Bombay has always been defined by the strength of its people and the bonds that endure long after one leaves the campus. I warmly invite you to remain connected with the Institute, visit whenever you can, and continue to engage with us as partners in shaping the next chapter of our shared journey.

Warmly,

Prof. Upendra V. Bhandarkar
