Prof. Agrawal, thank you for speaking to us today. I see that you worked at Telco for two years before moving to Australia for your post-doc and then to IIT Bombay. Why did you make the switch from industry to academia?

It was always pretty clear that I wanted to get into academia. But after I graduated I got an offer from Telco (now Tata Motors) and I thought that it would be a wonderful opportunity to get an insight into the industrial perspective.

Dear Alumnus,

I hope this message finds you in good health and high spirits. As we bid farewell to the scorching heat of June, I look forward to welcoming the invigorating month of July. With its gentle monsoon showers and cool breezes, July brings a sense of rejuvenation and renewal to our campus, reminding us of the constant evolution and growth that defines our beloved Institute. Here are a few pictures/videos to kindle your memories and trigger your nostalgia:

Before proceeding, I have three immensely delightful news to present. IIT Bombay was placed within the top 150 universities in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings 2024 for the first time ever. The Institute ranked first in India and 149th in the world and moved up 23 places from its 172nd rank last year. Please join me in celebrating our beloved Institute’s outstanding accomplishment! Look for a detailed write-up on this accomplishment in the newsletter.

It is also with tremendous joy and profound gratitude that I would like to inform you about the staggering generosity and benevolence of one of our own. Mr. Nandan Nilekani, our illustrious alumnus and visionary leader, exemplifies the enduring spirit and generosity of our alumni community and bestowed upon IIT Bombay a monumental gift of Rs. 315 crores. This unprecedented contribution is the largest ever single private donation made in India to an academic institution. His donation is a testament to his unflinching commitment to education and belief in the transformative power of knowledge. The Institute will use his philanthropic donation with integrity and thanks Mr. Nilekani for his visionary support of his alma mater. IIT Bombay will also host a felicitation ceremony followed by a grand reception on July 26, 2023, to celebrate Mr. Nilekani’s remarkable association with his alma mater. We have a more detailed write-up on Mr. Nilekani in the newsletter.

Finally, we successfully hosted the highly anticipated second edition of our flagship annual CSR Conclave – Tech for Development in June 2023. We went bigger and bolder this year and succeeded beyond our wildest expectations. The event served as a dynamic interactive platform for eminent industry and corporate leaders, esteemed alumni, IITB faculty members, and distinguished guests to converge and discuss technology’s crucial role in the development of India. Please look for a detailed Special Report on the event in the newsletter.

The month of July also brings with it the annual FAN-ADAM to be held at Northwestern University, Chicago. We are also eagerly looking forward to visiting and re-establish our connection with our alumni community based in Toronto and Montreal. Look for details on the various activities we have planned for both events in the Curtain Raiser section of the newsletter.

We also have all of our other regular articles including Alumni Accolades, Faculty Accolades, Student Success Stories, Alumni News, Institute Highlights, Upcoming Events, and more in this month’s newsletter.

I want to end by extending my deepest gratitude for your unwavering support, dedication, and belief in the life-changing impact of quality education. Your invaluable contributions –  by way of mentorship, philanthropy, exemplary achievements, and service to your community continue to shape the trajectory of IIT Bombay. While our unbreakable bond transcends time and distance, let us embrace the challenges that lie ahead with the same resilience, tenacity, and passion that have characterized our beloved alma mater.

Thank you for being an integral part of our journey, and I look forward to celebrating many more milestones together. Please drop by and say hello whenever you are in Mumbai.

Sincerely,
