OBITUARY

In Loving Memory of Ms. Nina Kar: A Testament to Compassion and Community Spirit

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Ms. Nina Kar, the cherished wife of the late esteemed faculty member, Prof. Subir Kar, on December 23, 2023. As we navigate this moment of loss, our hearts extend to the Kar family, enveloping them in the warmth of our deepest condolences

Ms. Kar bequeathed her property (a flat in Powai) to IIT Bombay to set up the Prof. Subir Kar Chair Professorship in the Mechanical Engineering Department. Prof. Subir Kar was a very well-known researcher in fluid mechanics and was instrumental in setting up the Biomedical Engineering program at IIT Bombay. He was also an expert in Rabindra Sangeet. He expired in 2001.

Over the past few months, Ms. Kar’s act of generosity was matched by IIT Bombay’s extensive alumni community. During Ms. Kar's challenging medical journey, our alumni community rallied around in full force even as their compassion and generosity shone brightly.

As we step into the new year, I am delighted to share some highlights from the past few weeks, reflecting the vibrancy and spirit that define our alma mater.

IIT Bombay celebrated its annual Alumni Day on December 24, 2023. It was a joyous occasion, marked by the warmth of shared memories and the enthusiasm of reconnecting with fellow alumni. The campus echoed with laughter and nostalgia as you, our esteemed alumni, came together to celebrate the enduring bonds forged during your time at IIT Bombay. Your presence made the day truly special, and we are grateful for the invaluable contributions each of you has made to the IITB legacy. Look for a Special Report on the event in the newsletter.

We were also delighted to host the Class of 1998 for their SJRU celebrations. December 2023 also brought into focus, Mood Indigo, Asia’s largest youth festival, and once again showcased the creative prowess of our students. This iconic event, woven into the fabric of our alma mater, brought back memories of shared experiences and enduring friendships. The festival continues to build upon the foundation and legacy that you helped establish. We have a detailed Special Report on the four-day event for you to reminisce and feel nostalgic.

I also encourage you to enjoy a Special Report on a recent corporate collaboration with FedEx towards the setting up of a new Centre of Excellence at IIT Bombay.
