From the Dean's Desk December-2025

Dear Alumni,

This month brings a wonderful set of updates that reflect the strength, generosity, and ambition of the IIT Bombay community.

I want to quickly apprise you of some major events over the past few days.

We were delighted to welcome the Honourable Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, Dr. Jitendra Singh, to campus. He dedicated IIT Bombay’s Liquid Helium Facility to the nation (you can read more on this in the Institute Highlights section of this newsletter). Dr. Singh also announced the establishment of a Rs. 720 crore “Quantum Fabrication & Central Facilities” under the ‘National Quantum Mission’ during his visit to the Institute.

Our very own Distinguished Alumnus, Dr. Shridhar Shukla, recently received yet another accolade in his illustrious life when he was inducted into the NC (North Carolina) State ECE Alumni Hall of Fame. Many congratulations to him.

We also had the privilege of meeting our illustrious alumni in Bengaluru and Mumbai over the past few weeks. Each interaction was a reminder of the deep bonds our alumni continue to share with their alma mater.

Moving on to the December 2025 newsletter, we feature two Special Reports. The first one is on the inaugural Emerging Science, Technology & Innovation Conclave 2025 (ESTIC 2025), where IIT Bombay made its presence felt. The second report is on the 2nd National Wellbeing Conclave 2025 that was held on campus.

This month, we celebrate the generosity of alumni, including Dr. Jay Lala, the Class of 1997, the Ayyar family, the Desais, and the Dands, whose meaningful contributions—ranging from advanced research facilities to legacy property gifts—continue to strengthen IIT Bombay’s future; for more, read the Alumni Giving section in the NL.

We are also delighted to spotlight our very own Ashok (Ash) Abhyankar, whose remarkable career and recent Lifetime Achievement Award by IIT Alumni Canada embody the spirit and impact of IIT Bombay’s global alumni community; for more, read the Alumni Accolades section in the NL. Other alumni highlights include the brilliant Sachin Katti – you can read about him in the Alumni Spotlight section.

I want to draw your attention to the outstanding work being done by our faculty. This month, we spotlight the achievements of Prof. Vikram M. Gadre, Prof. Abhishek Verma, Prof. Jayesh Pillai, Prof. Siby K. George, and Prof. Krishnamurthi Ramasubramanian, whose award-winning innovations and impactful initiatives continue to elevate IIT Bombay’s academic and creative excellence; for more, read the Faculty Spotlight section in the NL.

From new MoUs that strengthen industry–academia collaboration to impactful corporate engagements on campus, partnerships with Paragise Pvt. Ltd., FedEx, and Bajaj Electricals continue to expand IIT Bombay’s innovation ecosystem; for more, read the Corporate Collaboration section in the NL.

Our students continued to shine globally, with the Mars Rover Team and AUV-IITB earning top ranks at premier international competitions, showcasing IIT Bombay’s exceptional technical talent. For more information, read the Student Success Story section in the NL.

As always, you’ll also find our regular features, including Centres of Excellence, Lecture Series, Research Spotlight, Faculty Accolades, Institute News and Highlights, Upcoming Events, and more in this month’s newsletter.

Please take a moment to engage with a few initiatives that are shaping our community’s future. The Dean ACR Annual Report 2024–25 offers a snapshot of what we have accomplished together this past year. And consider contributing to Name Your Hostel Room and IIT Bombay’s First-Ever GO-IITB Canada Campaign featured under the Giving Back section in the NL. Each of these efforts reflects the generosity and shared commitment that make our alumni network so strong.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support and connection to IIT Bombay. With your partnership, we continue to nurture excellence, expand opportunities, and shape what the next generation of IIT Bombay can achieve.

Warmly,

Prof. Upendra V. Bhandarkar
