IITB alumnus, Akshay Saxena (B.Tech./M.Tech., Chemical Engineering, 2006), Co-CEO and Co-Founder of Avanti Fellows, has been named the Social Entrepreneur of the Year – India 2024 by the Jubilant Bhartia Foundation.

This prestigious recognition honours Mr. Saxena’s relentless efforts to transform the educational landscape in India, empowering disadvantaged students to access quality education and careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).

Founded in 2009, Avanti Fellows aims to help students from underprivileged backgrounds lift themselves and their families out of poverty through targeted after-school programs, life skills training, academic counselling, and mentorship. Mr. Saxena’s vision is not only ambitious but also impactful. Today, Avanti Fellows is reaching over 25,000 students across six large government school systems, with students engaging in more than two hours of learning each day. By 2030, the organization plans to expand its reach to 250,000 students annually, equipping them with the skills and opportunities needed to access quality STEM undergraduate programs and, ultimately, professional growth that can change their life trajectories.

In addition to his work at Avanti Fellows, Saxena also co-founded Avanti Learning Centres in 2012, which focuses on transforming how students in grades 8-10 learn science and mathematics. Utilizing a blend of technology and collaborative learning, Avanti Learning Centres have created some of the most effective teaching programs for math and science globally. These programs are being used in over 100 schools across India, spanning rural towns, government schools, and leading private institutions in Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru.
