IIT Bombay is delighted to announce that Dr. Kishor Subhash Jaiswal (B.Tech., Civil Engineering, 2006), has been awarded the prestigious Meritorious Service Award by the U.S. Department of the Interior. This esteemed recognition, the second highest honour granted by the department, acknowledges Dr. Jaiswal’s outstanding scientific contributions in earthquake risk assessment and his instrumental role in advancing the safety and resilience of communities worldwide. Dr. Jaiswal frequently advises the US President on their government’s response to earthquake crisis around the world.
Dr. Jaiswal’s work, particularly in the development of the Prompt Assessment of Global Earthquakes for Response (PAGER) system, has had a profound impact on how the world responds to seismic events. PAGER is a critical tool used by disaster responders to quickly assess earthquake-induced casualties and economic losses, enabling faster and more effective interventions. This innovative system has provided invaluable situational awareness during some of the world’s most devastating earthquakes, saving lives and minimizing the impact of natural disasters.
As Chief of Engineering and Risk Projects at the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), Dr. Jaiswal continues to lead initiatives that shape earthquake risk management strategies for buildings and critical infrastructure. His work on the Estimated Annual Losses for the United States study, commissioned by FEMA, and his significant contributions to the Global Earthquake Model (GEM) have established him as a thought leader in earthquake risk reduction.
Dr. Jaiswal’s dedication to advancing the field is matched by his contributions to research and policy. He has authored over 150 peer-reviewed publications and frequently advises government agencies, including the U.S. President, on earthquake crisis response strategies. His recognition with the EERI Housner Fellowship and the GEM Outstanding Contribution Award are a testament to his influence and expertise in the field.
This latest accolade is a reflection of Dr. Jaiswal’s exceptional career, built on a foundation of innovation, scientific rigor, and a commitment to making a difference. His work continues to address the U.S. Department of the Interior’s goal of enhancing community resilience and protecting lives from natural disasters.
Dr. Jaiswal’s achievements exemplify the extraordinary potential of IIT Bombay alumni. From his roots in the rigorous academic environment of IIT Bombay’s Civil Engineering program to his groundbreaking contributions on the global stage, he continues to inspire future generations of engineers, researchers, and leaders.
IIT Bombay has long been known for nurturing exceptional talent and fostering innovation that addresses global challenges. Dr. Jaiswal’s journey is a shining example of how IIT Bombay’s alumni continue to shape the future and impact the world through their dedication to science, technology, and societal well-being.
