IIT Bombay-led BharatGen, India’s government-backed multimodal SovereignAI initiative, has secured a landmark funding of Rs. 988.6 crore from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).
The recognition was formally awarded by Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, Hon’ble Union Minister of Electronics & Information Technology, to Prof. Shireesh Kedare, Director of IIT Bombay; Prof. Ganesh Ramakrishnan; and Mr. Rishi Bal at the India AI Summit Pre-event in Delhi.

IIT Bombay is spearheading the ‘Daksha’ mission, an ambitious initiative to develop and launch a pair of satellites housing the world’s most powerful space telescopes. The mission, led by Prof. Varun Bhalerao from the Physics Department, aims to propel India into the global deep space exploration arena. ‘Daksha’ is a collaborative effort with the Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) and the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA), leveraging expertise from India’s top research institutions.
