IIT Bombay and KSEB Power Up India’s First Field-Level Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) Pilot

IIT Bombay and the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to launch India’s largest Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) field pilot. The MoU was formalized at KSEB’s headquarters in Trivandrum, Kerala.

This ambitious pilot aims to modernize Kerala’s electricity grid by enabling electric vehicles (EVs) to support a range of grid services. It will also open up new opportunities for EV users through potential revenue streams such as reduced electricity bills and a more reliable power supply.

Leading the initiative from IIT Bombay is Prof. Zakir Hussain Rather of the Grid Integration Lab. The pilot will explore how V2G technology can boost rooftop solar integration, manage EV charging loads, support peak shaving, enable demand response and congestion management, and provide ancillary services for increased renewable energy adoption. Enhancing grid resilience and developing business models for stakeholders involved in V2G services are also key goals of the project.

As India’s first large-scale V2G field trial, this initiative is expected to yield valuable, real-world insights that can inform policies and regulatory frameworks, paving the way for a faster and a more seamless adoption of V2G technologies across the country.

This landmark initiative also received notable media coverage. Read more on how IIT Bombay is helping drive this transition:
