It is with great sadness that the IIT Bombay community mourns the passing of Mr. Suresh Shankar Gurjar on March 30, 2024, at the age of 79. His memory will be cherished by his wife of 52 years, Charlotte “Sherry” Gurjar, their children Rishi, Ritu, and Jaya, as well as their respective partners and his beloved grandchildren Anika, Kiran, and Hana.
Suresh Gurjar was a distinguished civil engineer, graduating with first-class honors from IIT Bombay. He continued his education with a Master’s in Civil Engineering from Dalhousie University and an MBA from the University of Alberta, equipping him with a comprehensive skill set that would prove instrumental in his career. His professional journey led him to Canada, where he excelled in the field of engineering, holding various executive positions over his illustrious 40-year career. Mr. Gurjar’s expertise and leadership guided him to impactful roles at companies such as Hardy Associates, AGRA Earth & Environmental, and Thurber Engineering, where he made significant contributions and left a lasting impact on the engineering landscape. His innovative approach and dedication to excellence earned him respect and admiration from colleagues and peers across the industry.
He was deeply committed to education and this was evident in his role as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Alberta. His dedication extended to numerous esteemed organizations such as the Consulting Engineers of Alberta and the Alberta Ready Mixed Concrete Association. His impact and generosity left an indelible mark on those who had the privilege of knowing him.
Prof. Ravi Gudi, Dean ACR, knew him personally and reflected on his interactions with Mr. Gurjar. With deep sadness, Prof. Gudi reminisced on the past and said, “I am greatly saddened by Suresh’s departure. I have known him since my PhD days in Edmonton, Alberta. He gave me so many practical suggestions on careers and research and was very nostalgic and proud of his IITB connection.”
Mr. Suresh Gurjar’s passing is a significant loss, not only for his family and friends but also for the broader community he impacted through his life and work. Mr. Gurjar’s legacy as a civil engineer, leader, and mentor will inspire future generations at the Institute and beyond. His journey exemplifies the excellence and influence of IIT Bombay alumni, who continue to shape the world with their expertise, innovation, and dedication to their fields.
Mr. Suresh Gurjar will be remembered with deep fondness and respect. May his soul rest in peace. Om Shanti.
