IIT Bombay Celebrates First Cohort of GESH IITB Living Lab Fellows

IIT Bombay’s Research Hub for Green Energy and Sustainability (GESH IITB) recently celebrated the successful completion of its inaugural GESH IITB Living Lab Fellowship Programme, a pioneering initiative dedicated to advancing campus sustainability.

Over the past three months, a dynamic group of student fellows worked on hands-on, solution-driven projects tackling some of the campus’s most pressing environmental challenges—ranging from food waste and water conservation to energy management, climate resilience, and behavioural change.

The fellowship marks a key milestone under the broader GESH IITB Living Lab Programme for Campus Sustainability, which aims to transform the campus into a living model for sustainable innovation, driven by student engagement and real-world experimentation.

Student Innovation Takes Centre Stage at Greenovate 2025

GESH IITB also hosted Greenovate 2025, a showcase of student-led innovations focused on sustainability. Organised in collaboration with the Centre for Climate Studies, the Desai Sethi School of Entrepreneurship, and the Institute Innovation Council (IIC), the event provided a dynamic platform for emerging ideas across clean tech, waste management, water treatment, and carbon capture. From next-gen batteries and smart plastic alternatives to greywater recycling and compostable packaging, student teams presented transformative solutions to some of today’s most urgent environmental challenges.

Winners

  • SusPak: Compostable food trays made from bagasse and wood pulp
  • GreyCycle: A modular system for greywater treatment

Runners-Up

  • Ecoard Board: Sustainable packaging using invasive water hyacinth
  • ScrapXchange: A peer-to-peer platform for scrap trading

The event was judged by a distinguished panel from academia and industry, including Dr. Vivek Dalvi, Ms. Jayshree Nayak, Dr. Rosa Lyngwa, and Dr. Junaid. A unifying message echoed through the event: “Sustainability is the problem. Innovation is the process. Impact is the outcome.”

Greenovate 2025 reinforced IIT Bombay’s commitment to nurturing purpose-driven entrepreneurship and equipping students to turn powerful ideas into real-world impact.

This is just the beginning. As GESH IITB continues to support impactful ideas and action on the ground, IIT Bombay is steadily moving toward becoming a leading example of sustainable living and learning.
