IIT Bombay Distinguished Alumnus, Mr. Bharat Desai (B.Tech., Electrical Engineering, 1975), and his wife, Ms. Neerja Sethi, have launched an ambitious new scholarship initiative that promises to transform the future of women in STEM. Named WINGS, Women INspiring Growth in STEM, this groundbreaking initiative marks a bold step in breaking down financial barriers and championing women’s education in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. This scholarship programme has the power to transform women’s education in India by opening doors to opportunity, fostering leadership, and serving as a catalyst that inspires and accelerates the creation of other programmes with lasting impact.
This first-of-its-kind initiative will offer full tuition support to undergraduate women students in STEM at IIT Bombay, ensuring that economic limitations do not hinder academic ambition. The first cohort will begin in the 2026–2027 academic year, and the programme will encourage students from rural communities to apply to IIT Bombay.
Professor Shireesh Kedare, Director, IIT Bombay, emphasized the importance of this scholarship initiative. He said, “Financial constraints should never determine a student’s future. This scholarship initiative is a commitment to ensuring that talented young women in STEM have the freedom to pursue their aspirations without limitations. It is a step toward a more equitable and diverse student community at IIT Bombay, which will shape the future of science and technology.”
Speaking to the initiative’s far-reaching impact, Mr. Desai shared, “Education is the most powerful tool for change. By removing financial obstacles, we are unleashing the talent and determination of young women who will drive the future of innovation and progress in India.”
The WINGS initiative reflects IIT Bombay’s deep and enduring partnership with its alumni community, whose vision and generosity continue to shape the Institute’s trajectory. By empowering women in STEM, this landmark scholarship not only advances equity and opportunity on campus but also underscores how alumni engagement remains central to IIT Bombay’s mission of driving knowledge, innovation, and societal progress.
