IIT Bombay’s Distinguished Alumnus, Mr. Nandan Nilekani, Revisits His Alma Mater

This profound bond was prominently showcased during Mr. Nandan Nilekani’s recent visit to his alma mater. Nearly a year after his extraordinary donation of Rs. 315 Crores (USD 38.5 Million), Mr. Nilekani returned to observe the tangible outcomes of his significant contribution.

While making his landmark donation last year, Mr. Nilekani remarked, “IIT Bombay has been a cornerstone in my life, shaping my formative years and laying the foundation for my journey. As I celebrate 50 years of my association with this esteemed Institution, I am grateful to give forward and contribute to its future. This donation is more than just a financial contribution; it is a tribute to the place that has given me so much and a commitment to the students who will shape our world tomorrow.”

Today, his vision is coming to life at IIT Bombay through transformative advancements across various fields.

Mr. Nilekani’s philanthropic vision has sparked substantial advancements across a wide array of research areas. His support has bolstered key initiatives across several domains such as Semiconductor Technologies (SemiX), Biosciences, & Healthcare, The proposed SemiX Lab will advance semiconductor technologies and focus on materials science, system integration, and chiplet hetero integration. The setting up of a Pre-Clinical Facility will accelerate research in biosciences research and the development of affordable therapies.

Mr. Nilekani’s generosity has also funded several prominent projects including the development of prototypes, diagnostics, and innovative facilities. These efforts span multiple disciplines, driving interdisciplinary progress and reinforcing IIT Bombay’s position at the forefront of global scientific research.

During his campus visit, Mr. Nilekani also observed the significant progress on the refurbishment of IIT Bombay’s historic Main Building, now renamed the Nandan Nilekani Main Building in his honour. This iconic structure, which has stood as a symbol of academic excellence for 65 years, is undergoing an extensive revitalization. The renovation blends the building’s rich heritage with cutting-edge facilities, transforming it into a modern symbol of IIT Bombay’s ascent to international prominence in technical education.

This revitalization is just one example of how Mr. Nilekani’s vision is being realized across the campus. Beyond the physical transformation, it has also strengthened the Institute’s governance and oversight mechanisms, ensuring that it is strategically deployed to advance IIT Bombay’s mission. A dedicated committee, comprising alumni and Institute leadership, oversees the effective utilization of these funds, ensuring that Mr. Nilekani’s contribution supports the Institute’s journey toward global excellence with transparency and accountability.
