FARE AWARDS

The Institute also honoured 16 distinguished faculty members with the Faculty Awards for Research Excellence (FARE). This prestigious initiative, established by the Class of 1973 during their Golden Jubilee Reunion, recognizes and promotes significant research contributions among the younger faculty at IIT Bombay. FARE aims to foster a vibrant research culture at IIT Bombay across various fields including Engineering and Design, Basic Science, and Applied Sciences. This year, numerous applications were received for the awards, reflecting the strong enthusiasm and dedication within IIT Bombay’s academic community. The selection process involved thorough evaluations by sectional committees, with the final decisions made by a Central Committee composed of senior faculty, external experts, and batch representatives.

IIT Bombay International Award for Excellence in Research in Engineering and Technology

In a demonstration of its commitment to fostering global innovation, IIT Bombay proudly presented the International Award for Excellence in Research in Engineering and Technology to Dr. Tony Quek, a leading figure in wireless communications and network intelligence. Dr. Quek, a tenured professor at the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) and an IEEE Fellow, was honoured for his groundbreaking contributions to ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) and the broader field of network intelligence.

This prestigious award was established through the generous support of IITB alumnus, Mr. Shantanu Rastogi (B.Tech., M.Tech., EE, Nanotechnology, 2002), and Mr. Sandeep Naik (Managing Director, Head of India and Asia Pacific, General Atlantic). The award acknowledges pioneering research that transcends borders and includes a monetary prize of INR 10 lakhs. With 25 nominations received from across Asia, including Bhutan, Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam, and Singapore, the award underscores the collaborative spirit and international reach of IIT Bombay’s mission to drive technological advancement for the greater good.

At the Institute Colloquium held at the IIT Bombay campus, Dr. Quek shared his insights in a speech titled “My Personal Research Experience and Research Pathway.” His address touched upon his distinguished career that spans pivotal research at MIT, impactful roles at A*STAR, and his current leadership in the Future Communications R&D Program at SUTD.

Dr. Quek’s extensive body of work has been instrumental in shaping the future of wireless communications and network intelligence. As the Head of Pillar for Information Systems Technology and Design and the Cheng Tsang Man Chair Professor at SUTD, Dr. Quek has consistently pushed the boundaries of what is possible in wireless communications, particularly in ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) and network intelligence.

In addition to his academic and research leadership, Dr. Quek has played a crucial role in global scholarly communities, contributing as a member of the IEEE Signal Processing Society SPCOM Technical Committee and serving on the editorial boards of several leading IEEE publications. His influence extends through his co-authorship of seminal texts such as “Small Cell Networks” and “Cloud Radio Access Networks,” both published by Cambridge University Press.

Dr. Quek’s recognition by IIT Bombay is not merely an acknowledgment of his past achievements but a celebration of the potential for cross-border collaborations in technology and engineering that can solve some of the world’s most pressing challenges. His work exemplifies how academic excellence and innovative research can intersect to create tangible societal benefits.

The IIT Bombay International Award for Excellence in Research in Engineering and Technology continues to highlight the Institute’s dedication to recognizing and nurturing research that transcends geographic boundaries, fostering a global network of innovators dedicated to societal progress.
