IIT Bombay Celebrates its 67th Foundation Day

IIT Bombay celebrated its 67th Foundation Day on March 10, 2026.

The event was graced by the Chief Guest, Prof. (Dr.). Balram Bhargava, Padma Shri; National Academy of Sciences Meghnad Saha Distinguished National Chair; Immediate Past DG of ICMR; Immediate Past Secretary, Department of Health Research, GoI; Former Chief of Cardiothoracic Centre, AIIMS, New Delhi; and Former President of National Academy of Sciences, India.

During the event, the Institute honoured the contributions of its faculty members and alumni who have made their mark in their chosen fields and presented several prestigious awards recognising excellence in teaching, research, and societal impact.

These included the following:

Prof. S.C. Sahasrabudhe Lifetime Achievement Award

The Institute presented the Prof. S.C. Sahasrabudhe Lifetime Achievement Award to Prof. Rajiv Dusane, Department of Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science, in recognition of his outstanding contributions as teacher, researcher, and administrator. The award recognises outstanding individuals whose pioneering spirit and demonstrated inventiveness throughout their careers have improved our society and inspired others.

Prof. S.C. Bhattacharya Award for Excellence in Research in Pure Sciences (2025) –
Prof. H.H. Mathur Award for Excellence in Research in Applied Sciences (2025)

 

The Institute conferred the Prof. S.C. Bhattacharya Award for Excellence in Research in Pure Sciences (2025) on Prof. K.G. Suresh, Department of Physics, for his outstanding contributions in the area of Magnetism in Intermetallics, Spintronics, Magnetic Skyrmions, and Topological Materials.

The Prof. H.H. Mathur Award for Excellence in Research in Applied Sciences (2025) was conferred on Prof. R.S. Jangid, Department of Civil Engineering, for his outstanding contributions in the area of Seismic Base Isolation, Earthquake-Resistant Design, Stochastic Earthquake Analysis, and Inerter-Based Control Devices.

Distinguished Alumnus Awards (DAA) / Young Alumni Achiever Awards (YAAA)

The Institute recognised select IIT Bombay alumni who have excelled in their fields and made the Institute proud with the Distinguished Alumnus Awards (DAA) and the Young Alumni Achiever Awards (YAAA).

Institute Cleanliness Award

In line with IIT Bombay’s commitment to sustainability and cleanliness, the Institute Cleanliness Award was also presented during the event. The Cleanliness Award recognises the dedicated efforts of various academic departments, Section 8 companies, hostels, and non-academic sections/ buildings in creating and maintaining a Clean, Green, and Happy Campus. The winners, selected based on the committee’s detailed assessment, were felicitated with a Rotating Trophy and a Certificate of Appreciation during the Foundation Day ceremony.

The Foundation Day event was held in the presence of the awardees, their family members, Institute functionaries, and invited dignitaries, and was transmitted live on IIT Bombay’s YouTube channel.
