An esteemed alumnus of the Institute, Mr. Anil Chandhok (B.Tech., Chemical Engineering, 1977) recently received the very prestigious Cruz de Oficial de Orden del Mérito, also known as the Officer’s Golden Cross – Civil Merit Medal. The award is granted to individuals who have made significant contributions to the strengthening of ties between Spain and India. Mr. Chandhok was honoured at an exclusive ceremony held at the Residence of the Ambassador of Spain in India.
This prestigious accolade, first instituted by King Alfonso XIII under the Royal Decree of 25 June 1926, is awarded to recognize “Civic virtues of public servants in the service of the State, along with extraordinary services by Spanish and foreign citizens to the benefit of the Nation.” Mr. Chandhok’s contributions were specifically noted for their impact on promoting Spanish gastronomic culture in India. His efforts in facilitating the introduction and commercialization of Spanish agri-food products in the Indian market have played a pivotal role in enhancing the appreciation and consolidation of Spain’s culinary wealth in India.
The Civil Merit Medal citation highlighted Mr. Chandhok’s fundamental role in the dissemination of Spanish culture through his professional endeavours, making him the first businessperson from India to receive this rare honour.
IIT Bombay is delighted and celebrates Mr. Chandhok’s outstanding achievement and his continued contributions to fostering international relations and cultural exchange. His success underscores the global impact and the diverse capabilities of our alumni, who not only excel in their professional fields but also contribute significantly to global cultural understanding.
