(FAP) is a 14-year-old honor-based system of sustainable peer-to-peer support which provides merit and need-based scholarships to all undergraduate and graduate students of IIT Bombay (IITB) while also offering career preparedness initiatives, such as industrial visits and mentoring.

Administered by IIT Bombay Alumni Association in collaboration with IIT Bombay and IIT Bombay Heritage Foundation, Tata Motors Ltd., and Foundation for Excellence (FFE), FAP covers the entire registration fee of students including tuition fees, mess bills, etc. Students who receive financial aid return the money as a donation once they graduate so that it may go to the next student who needs assistance.

All students across all programs and disciplines are eligible for support.

Student Development Fund

A significant impact of the pandemic was in the form of classes being conducted in the virtual mode. This meant that students needed access to computers and/or laptops and broadband connections. Unfortunately, a number of students could not afford the hardware needed to continue with their education. Donations helped in providing them with laptops and broadband connections so that they could complete their coursework on time. Even though the classes are now back to the in-person mode, laptops are now required as part of the curriculum. Contributions towards IT & Hardware help us in ensuring every student has the required equipment for their course work.

The IITBAA Benevolent Fund was set up to provide financial assistance to the extended IIT Bombay community (past and present) including students, staff members of the Institute, faculty, and their extended families. The fund provides financial relief to recipients to tide over emergencies such as unexpected health crises including emergency hospitalisation and medical fees, school fees, and other critical hardships faced by them or major downturns causing undue hardships in their lives.

In India, every year, more than 1 crore students appear in CBSE, ICSE, and state board class 10th and 12th exams. Out of these students, more than 65% students study in non-English medium schools.

Often, such students when join higher education institutes where the primary language of instruction is English, face language barriers. Even when they wish to understand the content from supplementary resources such as the internet or trying to keep up with contemporary research, they face the similar issue. We are leaving behind such potential minds.

Udaan project enables translation of textbooks and learning materials in Engineering and all main streams of Higher learning, from English to Hindi and all Indian languages.

Prashant Dave was a Ph.D. (2012- 2018) student in IIT Bombay’s Interdisciplinary Programme in Climate Studies (IDPCS). Upon completing his degree, Prashant worked in CRISIL Global Research Analytics Ltd. and NextNav. Unfortunately, Prashant passed away in February 2022, due to cardiac arrest. The Institute is deeply shocked and saddened by the untimely demise of a cherished family member who showed tremendous potential and promise.

During his Ph.D., Prashant sought guidance and supervision from Prof. Mani Bhushan and Prof. Chandra Venkataraman. He also engaged in extensive research-based interactions with several students and other faculty members in the IDPCS. Prashant was recognised as a gifted student, who inspired everyone around him to chase after excellence. The “Prashant Dave Best Ph.D. Thesis Award” has been instituted to honour Prashant’s memory and use his example to motivate future generations of Ph.D. students.

Mainak Das was a Ph.D. student (2018-2020) in the Interdisciplinary Programme in Climate Studies (IDPCS). Unfortunately, Mainak passed away in October 2020, at the tender age of 27, due to covid-related complications.

During his Ph.D., Mainak was mentored by Prof. Arpita Mondal and Prof. Chandra Venkataraman. He was recognised for his high intellect, dedication, and sincerity. Mainak was a brilliant student who was deeply passionate about research. We at IIT Bombay will forever cherish the enriching experiences and precious memories shared with Mainak. The “Mainak Das Excellence in Publication Award” has been instituted to honour Mainak’s memory and use his example to motivate future generations of Ph.D. students.
