Preserving a Legacy: Narayana Guru Digital Research Resource Platform

The Narayana Guru Digital Research Resource Platform (NGDRRP), an initiative of IIT Bombay’s Office of the Dean, Alumni and Corporate Relations, in collaboration with the Sree Narayana Guru College of Commerce, Chembur, has successfully concluded its two-year journey. Supported by the Sree Narayana Mandira Samiti, this pioneering project has digitally preserved rare literature associated with the Sree Narayana Movement (SNM)—a significant reformist movement in Kerala’s early twentieth-century history.

The project team, led by Prof. Siby K. George (HSS Department, IIT Bombay), undertook the monumental task of digitizing fragile, privately held publications such as Vivekodayam, Dharmam, Prabodhakan, and Mitavadi. Through five intensive phases, the team scanned and catalogued 2,70,631 pages of invaluable archival material from across Kerala.

A major milestone was the project’s partnership with the South Asia Open Archives (SAOA) and JSTOR, making these materials freely accessible to researchers worldwide under the theme “Narayana Guru and Twentieth-Century Kerala.” As of September 2025, 2,218 sources are already live on the SAOA-JSTOR platform.

What began as a modest preservation exercise has evolved into a lasting open-access digital archive—a tribute to Narayana Guru’s enduring philosophy of equality and knowledge. The project also envisions a dedicated website to further expand access and host unpublished works.

This initiative exemplifies how IIT Bombay’s academic vision and alumni-supported collaborations can preserve cultural heritage while advancing digital scholarship.
