IIT Bombay and HRTI Establish the IIT Bombay–HRTI Centre of Excellence

IIT Bombay, in partnership with Hudson River Trading (facilitated through its Indian affiliate, HRTI Private Limited), has established the IIT Bombay–HRTI Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Next Gen Visual and Multimodal AI. This marks India’s first dedicated facility for developing foundational, India-centric Vision AI capabilities at scale. Supported by a long-horizon CSR initiative, the Centre addresses a critical national gap: the scarcity of large-scale visual and multimodal AI solutions tailored to the Indian context. As a hub for national research and innovation, the Centre will advance foundational and translational research in computer vision, vision-language models, generative AI, geospatial and medical imaging, and embodied AI. A core priority is to build high-quality datasets, benchmarks, and models grounded in Indian realities and powered by advanced AI compute and open research platforms. Beyond academic excellence, the Centre is committed to talent development and deploying AI solutions across healthcare, infrastructure, and governance.
