Diamond Jubilee Reunion (DJRU) – Class of 1966

IIT Bombay hosted the Diamond Jubilee reunion for the Class of 1966 on campus. Sixty years later, the class returned to campus with the same camaraderie and conviction that first defined them. Their Diamond Jubilee Reunion reflected renewed friendships and quiet pride in being one of the Institute’s pioneer batches.
With eight Distinguished Alumni Awardees among them, their impact extends well beyond their student years. Building on that legacy, the batch contributed ~Rs. 3 crore to the Class of 1966 Diamond Jubilee Legacy Project, supporting the Tinkerers’ Lab and the Financial Aid Programme for students. This builds on their Golden Jubilee contribution for the Tinkerers’ Lab and their continued support for Project Evergreen and student scholarships.

Lifelong Faculty Meet

The Lifelong Faculty Meet at IIT Bombay was conceived by Prof. Shireesh Kedare, Director, IIT Bombay, as a meaningful initiative to honour and reconnect with the Institute’s retired faculty, whose decades of dedication have shaped its academic excellence, research culture, and global standing. Envisioned as a platform to welcome them back to campus, the initiative reaffirmed that they remain an integral part of the IIT Bombay community. It also aimed to ensure that retired faculty feel valued, respected, and heard, while engaging them in thoughtful dialogue on themes that will shape the Institute’s future.
The first Lifelong Faculty Meet at the Institute brought together 90 faculty members and their families in an atmosphere filled with warmth, affection, and camaraderie.
Prof. Kedare, reflected on a journey shaped by moments big and small: from the excitement of creating the first optical fibre in the lab, to picking up students from hostels on scooters on examination day; from writing monthly postcards to parents that have now become nightly phone calls; from being supportive to being strict when needed; and from students once focused on simply completing their degrees, to families today seeking to understand the paths that lie ahead.
In one of the most poignant moments of the event, Prof. Ravindar Gudi, Deputy Director (FIA), said that the most common sentiment the Institute often heard from alumni was, “We are what we are because of IIT Bombay.” But he said, “IIT Bombay is what it is because of all of you (our faculty).”
Over the course of the meet, conversations explored how teaching and learning can evolve while maintaining academic rigour, how translational research can translate discoveries into societal and industrial impact, and how research can remain aligned with national priorities and global challenges.
