CoE on Critical Minerals, Metals, and Materials (CoE-CMMM)

IIT Bombay Launches New Centre of Excellence – CoE-CMMM

Prof. Ramaswamy Murugavel, Professor of Chemistry at IIT Bombay, who spearheaded the formation of the CoE on Critical Minerals, Metals and Materials (CoE-CMMM) at IIT Bombay, shared his thoughts with the IIT Bombay community.

“Greetings from the newly formed CoE on Critical Minerals, Metals and Materials (CoE-CMMM) at IIT Bombay under NCMM.

It was only on June 30th 2025, that we submitted our proposal for the recognition of IIT Bombay as a CoE Hub under the National Critical Minerals Mission. Things have moved so fast, and a lot of things have happened in the intervening ~ 6 weeks.

Subsequent to the proposal submission, we were invited to make a presentation (Level 1) to the Committee headed by the Economic Advisor of the Ministry of Mines on the 14th July 2025. This was a physical meeting that took place in the Shastri Bhavan and was attended by Prof Sakthi Saravanan Chinnasamy and me. Subsequently, a Level-2 online meeting took place on 31st July to further shortlist the CoEs, where it was decided to recognize IITB along with six other centres as CoEs under NCMM.

There have been a few communications between the Ministry of Mines and IITB since then on the formation of CoE. Following this, we have been recently issued a note that the Secretary, Ministry of Mines, will hold the first (review) meeting of IITB CoE on 23rd August at IIT Bombay. This will be an inter-ministerial meeting attended by DRDO, ANRF, DST, DAE, DSIR etc., through whom the actual research projects will be floated.

This will be the first opportunity for us to come face to face (the Hub with the spokes). The meeting will take place from 2 PM to 5 PM at the VMCC Board Room (located on the 4th Floor of our Convention Centre). We will share the program for the meeting soon.

If you have any specific questions, please write to me with a copy to office.coe-cmmm@iitb.ac.in. ”

After this, Prof. Murugavel shared his reflections on this achievement and the collaborative effort behind the Centre of Excellence on LinkedIn.

“Happy to share the news that the Ministry of Mines, GoI, has selected the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, along with six other institutions, as a Centre of Excellence under the National Critical Mineral Mission (NCMM).

IIT Bombay (the Hub) would cooperate with several ‘Spoke’ partners to further the research in the area of CM (Critical Minerals/Materials/Metals). I thank my IITB colleagues and the administration, who were instrumental in facilitating the preparation of an exhaustive proposal. I also thank the ‘spoke’ industries and institutions for supporting us.”

The launch of CoE-CMMM marks a pivotal step in IIT Bombay’s commitment to advancing India’s critical minerals and materials ecosystem. By bringing together academia, industry, and government, the Centre will play a vital role in strengthening the nation’s strategic capabilities, fostering innovation, and shaping a sustainable future.
