Prof. Subodh G. Mhaisalkar is the Tan Chin Tuan Centennial Professor in the School of Materials Science and Engineering and Executive Director, Energy Research Institute Nanyang Technological University (NTU) ( HYPERLINK “mailto : ERI@N” ERI@N) – a pan-University multidisciplinary research institute for innovative energy solutions, Singapore.
Prof. Mhaisalkar obtained his BTech degree in Metallurgical Engineering from IIT Bombay in 1984, his MS degree in Ceramic Engineering and PhD in Materials Science and Engineering from the Ohio State University in 1987 and 1990 respectively. His main areas of research comprise perovskite solar cells, light emitting diodes and printable electronics. Common to all these projects are methods of solution processing of semiconductors, fundamental device physics studies and device integration. Prof. Mhaisalkar is also a founder of a startup in energy harvesting and storage.
Prof. Mhaisalkar has graduated 30 Masters and PhD students and is currently supervising a group of eight PhD students and research fellows. He has published more than 388 research papers, more than 16,000 citations and has a H-Index of 57. His articles has appeared in top journals such as Science, Nature Materials, Nature Communications, Advanced Materials, NanoLetters, Angewande Chemie and many more. His active collaborations include partnerships with EPFL, UC Berkeley, TU Munich, CEA/CNRS France and IIT Bombay.
Prior to joining NTU in 2001, Prof. Mhaisalkar had over 10 years of research and engineering experience in the microelectronics industry where he held senior managerial positions in STATS Singapore, National Semiconductor and SIMTech.
As the Executive Director of Energy Research Initiative, Prof. Mhaisalkar leads a pan-university effort, coordinating all research activities within the University pertaining to energy and promoting interactions and collaborations between colleges in the area of energy research. In raising $200 M in research funding, ERI@N with a staff-strength of 225 full-time staff and 150 PhD scholarships has set up 38 Industry partnership projects, including joint-laboratories on NTU campus with global industry leaders like BMW, IBM, Johnson Matthey, Vestas, Gamesa, Rolls-Royce and Bosch.
Service contributions to NTU and MSE included participation in the MSE Management Committee (Chair Advisory Committee) as the Head of the Department for Materials Technology, as the Director of Advanced Materials Research Center (AMRC; 2004- 2011), and as the Director of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Cluster (NanoCluster) in NTU (from 1 March 2005 to 28 Feb 2008).
Prof. Mhaisalkar isa member of the European Research Council (ERC) – Advanced Grants PE5 Evaluation Committee panel and regularly contributes to research peer reviews for organizations in USA, Hong Kong and Israel. He is also the Meeting Chair for Materials Research Society Spring Meeting 2019; and has organized multiple symposia and conferences in Singapore’s Materials Research Society (MRS).
Prof. Mhaisalkar has received IEEE George E. Smith Award 2008; Ohio State University’s Professional Achievement Award 2012; Ohio State University College of Engineering Distinguished Alumnus Award 2012; Nanyang Award for Innovation and Entrepreneurship 2012; Singapore National Day Award – The Public Administration Medal (Silver) 2014 and was appointed as “Academician” by the Asia Pacific Academy of Materials – 2015.
