Mr. Sanjai Kohli received his B.Tech. in Aeronautical Engineering from IIT Bombay in 1979 and MS in Systems Science from Washington University in 1981.
For over three decades, Mr. Kohli has pioneered cutting edge hardware and software solutions that have greatly increased the utility of wireless communications and Global Positioning System (GPS). He has founded and co-founded three very successful companies in these areas and provided the technical leadership.
Mr. Kohli enabled the expansion of GPS into all of the consumer areas including cell phones, personal navigation devices, and car navigation.
Today, GPS provides location information to more than one billion users worldwide. For this contribution he is recognized worldwide as the architect of mass market GPS. In April 2010, he was named the “Inventor of the Year” by the European Union. The award placed Mr. Kohli in the hall of distinguished winners whose ideas and innovations have made a tremendous impact on shaping the modern world. The company he co-founded — SiRF Technology —captured more than 70 per cent of the global GPS semiconductor and software market by 2007.
He has also made contributions outside of GPS. In 1999, he founded WirelessHome (WH) that pioneered the last mile wireless market, claiming a 40 per cent market share by 2003. He was the co-founder-of TrueSpan, a company that developed multi-standard chips for digital television on cellphones.
Mr. Kohli is a Fellow of the IEEE and an Alumni Achievement recipient of Washington University, St Louis. He has 29 patents and several published papers to his credit.
