After receiving B.Tech. in Chemical Engineering from IIT Bombay in 1970, Dr. Roop Jyoti obtained his MBA from the Harvard Business School in 1976, MPA from the Kennedy School of Government in 1985, and Ph.D. in Political Economy and Government from Harvard University.
While at IIT Bombay, Dr. Jyoti has served as the General Secretary of hostel-8 and was a member of the institute basketball team. He was the Secretary of the Asian Club at the Harvard Business School. At Kennedy School, he was awarded the Lucius N. Littauer Fellowship.
Syamukapu, one of the companies in the Jyoti Group of Business in Nepal, which had been engaged in trading in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China since the 1940s came to a stop in the mid-1960’s. Dr. Jyoti restarted that business in 1977, and also established Tibet’s first joint venture factory in Lhasa.
Dr. Jyoti has served in different capacities in Nepal. During his tenure as the Minister of State for Finance, he introduced the system of colour-coded tax plates for the taxpayers and also pushed many reforms in the Nepalese tax system. He has been actively engaged in the spread of Vipassana Meditation, in the tradition of Sayagi U Ba Khin as taught by S.N. Goenka, in Nepal. He is currently the Area Teacher for Nepal.
Dr. Jyoti has been awarded several medals for his achievements in different fields such as Prasidhha Prabal Gorkhas Dakshin Bahu (II) in 2005 by His Majesty King Gyanendra; Mahindra Vidyas Bhushan “K” in 1999 by His Majesty King Birendra; Kasa Tadhan Guthi Medal in 1971 by Kasan Tadhan Guthi; and Mahindra Vidya Bhushan in 1971 by His Majesty King Birendra.
