Dr. Jayant Sathaye is a B.Tech. in Mechanical Engineering from IIT Bombay. Later, he obtained his Ph.D. degree from the University of California, USA.

He is internationally recognized for his work on climate change project-related issues in transportation, land-use change and forestry, and energy demand and supply in the developing world. His current interests include: development of new methods and analytical tools for evaluation of project baselines, role of carbon sinks in climate change mitigation, and sustainable development and transport policy. In recent years, he has organised several training and information workshops, conducted studies, and written papers and reports on these topics. He has been a guest editor of eleven special journal issues on climate change.

Dr. Sathaye was a contributing author in the Nobel Prize winning Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). He was among those who served as lead authors on various IPCC reports which confirmed the connection between human activities and global warming.

He has published widely in major energy and environmental journals and authored over one hundred and fifty publications on these topics. He has been a convening lead author, section leader and principal lead author of nine publications of the IPCC since 1990, and is currently co-convening lead author for the Sustainable Development and Mitigation chapter of the Special Report on Renewable Energy of IPCC. Dr. Sathaye has also led studies of regional and national energy strategies and their impact on local and global environment.

Dr. Sathaye is currently Senior Scientist and Leader of the International Energy Studies Group at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, University of California.
