Dr. Dileep George is currently the Director of Research at Google DeepMind.
After his B.Tech. at IIT Bombay, he went on to get his MS and PhD in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University, USA.
Dr. George is a serial entrepreneur, scientist, and engineer with contributions in AI, robotics, and neuroscience. He co-founded two companies in AI: Numenta and Vicarious. He co-founded Numenta with Jeff Hawkins and Donna Dubinsky, who were the founders of Palm and Handspring. At Numenta, he also co-developed the theory of Hierarchical Temporal Memory with Mr. Hawkins.
Vicarious, his second company, was a pioneer in AI for robotics and developed neuroscience inspired models for vision, mapping, and concept learning.
Vicarious attracted funding from prestigious VC firms like Founders Fund and Khosla Ventures and famous investors, including Mark Zuckerberg, Dustin Moskovitz, Jeff Bezos, and Ashton Kutcher.
In 2013, Vicarious got worldwide attention for fundamentally cracking the defense of text-based CAPTCHAs, an early breakthrough of generative AI models that was subsequently published in Science. Dr. George is also known for his publications on theories of the hippocampus and mathematical models of cortical circuits, in addition to several influential papers in AI and robotics.
Vicarious pioneered the AI-powered robotics-as-a-service business model and deployed robots in multiple industries for packaging and assembly work. In 2022, Vicarious was acquired by Alphabet to accelerate its efforts in robotics and AGI. As part of the acquisition, Dr. George and a team of researchers joined DeepMind.
Dr. George aims to develop a comprehensive theory and model of how the brain works. He has published several influential papers on this topic, including theories of the hippocampus and visual cortical circuits.
He has won several awards and accolades over the years, which include:
– Most Intriguing Entrepreneur Award from Goldman Sachs.
– Technology Pioneer Award from the World Economic Forum.
– Office of Naval Research Award.
