SPECIAL REPORT: Alumni Day

IIT Bombay celebrated its annual Alumni Day on December 28, 2025. Prof. Shireesh Kedare, Director, IIT Bombay, highlighted the Institute’s progress over the years and the pivotal role played by its alumni in this journey.

Prof. Kedare said, “Alumni are an important part of the IIT Bombay community. They are not only bringing in resources but also invaluable expertise and strong connections with society and industry.”

Some of the key events that took place during Alumni Day included:

 

Presentation of Distinguished Service Awards (DSA) and Chapter Service Awards (CSA)

The Institute presented the Distinguished Service Awards (DSA) and the Chapter Service Awards during the occasion.

The Distinguished Service Awards were conferred on:

  • Mr Mukund Kulkarni (B.Tech., Mechanical Engineering, 1971)
  • Mr Abhay Nadkarni (B.Tech., Mechanical  Engineering, 1981)
  • Ms Suhasini Sabnis (MSc., Mathematics, 1982)
  • Mr Shamrao Kattimani (B.Tech., CSE, 1989, and M.Tech., CSE, 1991)
  • The late Mr. Sushil Singh (B.Tech., Civil Engineering, 1991)

 

The Chapter Service Awards (CSA) were conferred on:

  • Alkesh Shah (B.Tech., Electrical Engineering, 1985) – Chapter: IITBHF, Boston
  • Amit Shiwalkar (B.Tech., Electrical Engineering, 1996) – Chapter: IITBHF, Southern California
  • Deepak Iyer (B.Tech., 1997, Electrical Engineering and Materials Science, 1997) – Chapter: IITBHF, Houston
  • Hrishikesh Sathawane (B.Tech., 1997, Engineering Physics, 1997) – Chapter: IITBHF, SF Bay Area
  • Arpit Kothari (B.Tech., Chemical Engineering, 2016) – Chapter: IITBAA, Indore
  • Shubham Jain (B.Tech., Computer Science and Engineering, 2016)
  • Karen Nimmy Stephen (M.Tech., Electrical Engineering, 2018) – Chapter: IITBAA, Japan

 

Mr. Ravishankar Gedela, CEO of IIT Bombay Development and Relations Foundation (IITB-DRF), made a presentation on the impact that alumni have brought to their alma mater.

The Institute then honoured its top donors of 2025 by unveiling a Donor Wall on the occasion.

 

Silver Jubilee Batch Legacy – Class of 2000

The Silver Jubilee Batch (Class of 2000) announced a landmark Rs. 50 crore commitment as their Legacy Contribution, supporting student initiatives, strengthening research capabilities, and contributing to IIT Bombay’s ambitious 2030 vision of ranking among the world’s top 50 universities, and fostering a legacy of excellence on the global stage.

 

Felicitation of Mr. Kirat Patel as Chairman Emeritus of IIT Bombay Alumni Association

IIT Bombay felicitated Mr. Kirat Patel (B.Tech., Mechanical Engineering, 1975) on becoming the first Chairman Emeritus of the IIT Bombay Alumni Association. The felicitation took place in the presence of senior IIT Bombay alumni, including  Mr. Ashok Kalbag, Mr. Narayan Sundaresean, Mr. Sudhir Nikam, Mr. Dhananjay Saheba, Ms. Zenobia Driver, and Mr. Mohan Kavrie.

Launch of Mr. Kanwal Rekhi’s Book

IITB Distinguished Alumnus, Mr Kanwal Rekhi (B.Tech., Electrical Engineering, 1967), presented his book, The Ground-breaker: Risks, Rewards and Lessons from a Legendary Entrepreneur, during Alumni Day. Published by HarperCollins, the book reveals his inspiring journey from IIT Bombay to Silicon Valley, including his formative years at the Institute, his entrepreneurial path, and his continued commitment to mentoring and nurturing future founders.

A team from the IIT Bombay Alumni Association (IITBAA), including Ms. Dipti Datye, CEO, IITBAA, and Board Members of IITBAA, Mr. Dhananjay Saheba and Ms. Zenobia Driver, delivered a presentation on the occasion. This included details on the activities IITBAA carried out during 2025, as well as their plans for the 25th anniversary celebration in 2026, combined with the IITB Heritage Foundation’s plans for their 30th anniversary. The IITBAA team also updated attendees on several of their ongoing and new initiatives, including Project Evergreen, the Alumni Centre, Hostels 6 and 9, Lumina, and the launch of the Alumni Timebank.

Mr. Shaji Varghese, CEO,  Society for Innovation & Entrepreneurship (SINE), spoke on the recently launched Y-Point Venture Capital Fund, India’s first academia-incubator linked deep tech VC fund, and requested the alumni to support and invest in their alma mater.

The Institute then launched the fifth edition of IIT Bombay’s fund-raising campaign ‘GO-IIT Bombay’ for the year 2025-26.
