FEATURE STORY: IIT Bombay CSR Conclave 2025 – A Vision Beyond Philanthropy: Fuelling Technology for Nation-Building

At IIT Bombay, CSR is more than philanthropy—it is a catalyst for national progress. By transforming corporate partnerships into research, innovation, and student empowerment, the Institute is laying the foundations of a stronger, more inclusive India.

This vision came alive during the fourth edition of IIT Bombay’s Annual CSR Conclave, held on June 6, 2025, at the Institute’s Powai campus. More than 500 participants, including 230 corporate delegates, joined faculty, students, industry leaders, and philanthropists to celebrate the power of partnerships in driving social impact. The theme, “Fuelling Technology for Nation-Building”, set the tone for a day of dialogue, collaboration, and inspiration.

The Two Pillars of IIT Bombay’s CSR Vision include:

1. Development of technology for nation-building.

2. Meaningful, measurable societal impact underpinned by strong governance.

With 81 new CSR partnerships in FY 2024–25 and support from over 140 companies, IIT Bombay continues to strengthen research, establish Centres of Excellence, endow faculty chairs, and expand scholarships—turning knowledge into innovation, and innovation into nation-building.

The Conclave’s intellectual energy came alive through a series of thought-provoking sessions. In his keynote, IIT Bombay Distinguished Alumnus Mr. Ashank Desai urged corporates to treat CSR as a long-term investment in India’s scientific ecosystem, moving from transactional funding to co-creation models that integrate academic research with practical implementation.

His vision of scaling technology-driven solutions resonated with the high-impact philanthropy panel, moderated by Prof. Ravindra Gudi, former Dean ACR, IIT Bombay, and featuring leaders such as Ms. Rekha Koita, Mr. Mirik Gogri, and Mr. Maharshi Vaishnav, who emphasized that CSR is not about charity but about building a self-reliant India through strategic innovation and ecosystem partnerships. This spirit of collaboration extended into the four concurrent breakout sessions, where faculty, industry experts, and corporate leaders explored opportunities in AI/ML and cybersecurity, sustainability and clean technologies, affordable and digital healthcare, and last-mile innovation. Together, these dialogues underscored the transformative role CSR can play in powering technology for nation-building.
