Prof. Ganesh Ramakrishnan: From Sanskrit Learning to Computational Linguistics

For Prof. Ganesh Ramakrishnan, his journey with Sanskrit has evolved from learning conversational Sanskrit to teaching, scholarship, and exploring its connections with technology. The Centre for Sanskrit Learning (CSL), IIT Bombay, has played an important role in this journey, including through its Sanskrit Vyākaraṇa programme and work on Samanvaya.
Prof. Ramakrishnan highlights the remarkable logical and systematic structure of Pāṇinian grammar, and its potential relevance to Indian languages, computational linguistics and even emerging areas such as artificial intelligence and large language models. With CSL’s growing collaborations with institutions including Vidyasvam, Samvardhan Gyankulam Foundation and Kavikulaguru Kalidas Sanskrit University, he sees exciting possibilities at the intersection of India’s linguistic knowledge traditions and technology.
