IIT Bombay Hosts Independence Day 2026

IIT Bombay celebrated India’s 80th Independence Day with great enthusiasm and pride.

The ceremony commenced with the unfurling of the National Flag by Prof. Shireesh Kedare, Director, IIT Bombay, in the esteemed presence of the Chief Guest and IITB Distinguished Alumnus, Mr. Suhas Mehta (B.Tech., Civil Engineering, 1983). In his address, Mr. Mehta said, “Today, India stands at another defining moment. The question is no longer whether Bharat will participate, but whether Bharat will lead.”

The Independence Day celebrations were followed by the presentation of the IIT Bombay Staff Excellence Awards (IITB-SEA), instituted in 2025 to recognise the outstanding contributions of non-teaching staff. The celebrations continued with a vibrant cultural programme by the students, showcasing the spirit of unity in diversity.

Also, the campus came alive with the colours of the nation as the cadets of NCC IITB organised a grand Tiranga Yatra, bringing together the entire campus community in a powerful celebration of patriotism, unity and national pride. Carrying a magnificent 1,000-ft Tiranga, students, faculty, staff and members of the campus community marched together through the heart of IIT Bombay.
