The IIT Bombay community mourns deeply the passing of Prof. Anirban Guha, Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, at the age of 54.

Prof. Guha was an exceptional academician, scientist, and innovator whose career reflected a rare and remarkable balance between teaching, research, and technology development. Equally at home in the classroom, the laboratory, and the field, he dedicated himself to advancing knowledge while ensuring that his work translated into meaningful real-world impact.

His research brought together the foundations of machine design with the possibilities of modern computing, contributing significantly to the fields of robotics, kinematics, and applied artificial intelligence. Among his many achievements was his leadership in the design and development of indigenous Remotely Operated Vehicles (Rovers), technologies that today serve an important role in training the Indian armed forces. His work exemplified a commitment to innovation in the service of the nation.

Over the years, Prof. Guha’s contributions earned widespread recognition. He was honoured by the Textile Machinery Manufacturers’ Association (India) for his groundbreaking work and received several prestigious awards from IIT Bombay, including the Dr. P. K. Patwardhan Technology Development Award, the Departmental Award for Excellence in Teaching, and the Prof. A. Jaganmohan Award for Professional Development by the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

Yet, beyond the accolades and achievements, Prof. Guha will be remembered for the lives he touched. As a teacher, he inspired generations of students to think deeply, create boldly, and pursue excellence with integrity. As a researcher and mentor, he nurtured curiosity, encouraged innovation, and helped shape the careers of countless young engineers and scholars. His influence will continue to be felt through the people he guided, the ideas he advanced, and the technologies he helped bring to life.

His passing is a profound loss to IIT Bombay, to the engineering community, and to all who had the privilege of knowing him.

We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, students, and all those whose lives were enriched by his presence. May they find strength and solace in the memories of a life lived with purpose, dedication, and impact.
