His impactful work spans innovations such as Udaan for Indian language translation, the DECILE framework for data-efficient deep learning, and BharatGen, India’s first government-funded multimodal large language model initiative supporting 22+ Indic languages.

IIT Bombay’s SJMSOM Faculty Help Launch India’s First Exchange-Traded Weather Derivatives

Prof. Piyush Pandey and Prof. Sarthak Gaurav from the Shailesh J. Mehta School of Management (SJMSOM), along with a multidisciplinary student team, contributed to a landmark consultancy project with the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange Limited. The collaboration led to India’s first exchange-traded weather derivative and the world’s first exchange-traded rainfall derivatives product. Approved by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), the product went live on June 1, 2026, marking a major milestone in financial innovation and climate-risk management.

IIT Bombay Faculty Develops GeoMeld and Advances Vision for Scalable Geospatial AI

Researchers at IIT Bombay, led by Prof. Biplab Banerjee, together with Dr. Maram Hassan, Aminur Hossain, and other collaborators, have developed GeoMeld, a large-scale multimodal geospatial dataset comprising nearly 2.5 million samples. Designed to support next-generation geospatial foundation models, GeoMeld integrates imagery, terrain, land-cover, and geographic metadata with an innovative agentic captioning framework for scalable geospatial intelligence. The work has been accepted at the CVPR Workshop MORSE, where the group will present five papers in total.
