ALUMNI GIVING

Dr. Lionel D’Luna (B.Tech., Electrical Engineering, 1973)

Bio MakerSpace Lab

We are deeply grateful to Dr. Lionel D’Luna, retired Senior Director at Broadcom Corporation, for his generous support of the establishment of a Bio MakerSpace Lab. This state-of-the-art facility, part of the MakerSpace initiative at IIT Bombay, will empower students and researchers to engage in hands-on, experiential learning at the intersection of biology, engineering, and innovation. MakerSpace labs are part of the institute’s broader shift toward learning by doing, supporting innovation, interdisciplinary projects, and preparing students to translate concepts into working prototypes.

The Bio MakerSpace lab envisions building engineering capability across areas such as synthetic biology, biomedical devices, therapeutics, bio-based materials, manufacturing, tissue engineering, and regenerative medicine, preparing the next generation of innovators to contribute meaningfully to India’s growing bio-innovation landscape.

Monal Chand (B.Tech., MEMS, 2000)

Strengthening Hands-On Materials Research at IIT Bombay

IIT Bombay alumnus Mr. Monal Chand (B.Tech., MEMS, 2000) is supporting a significant step forward in strengthening hands-on learning and research within the Department of Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science (MEMS). Through his generous contribution, the Institute will establish new shared fabrication facilities for metallic materials on campus.

These facilities will provide students and faculty with direct access to advanced fabrication processes, enabling faster prototyping and experimentation while reducing reliance on external vendors. The initiative is expected to enhance practical learning for multiple student cohorts and accelerate research outcomes.

By strengthening in-house capabilities, the new facility will also foster greater interdisciplinary collaboration across departments, supporting IIT Bombay’s continued leadership in materials science and engineering.

Alumni TimeBank

Launch of the Alumni TimeBank Initiative

As part of the Batch of 1997 legacy project, two alumni donors have graciously supported an initiative titled the Alumni TimeBank. The platform enables alumni to give back by contributing their most valuable resource—TIME—to their alma mater through a structured engagement framework. Alumni can share their expertise with students, faculty, institutional offices, and academic centres, creating meaningful and long-lasting impact across the IIT Bombay ecosystem.

Alumni TimeBank was launched on December 28, 2025, and received strong encouragement from the community, with a number of alumni already pledging their time.

The initiative has already translated intent into action through the successful pilot of Discover Your Future (DYF), a first-year student mentoring programme conducted from December 13–28, 2025, in partnership with the Student Flourishing Hub, IIT Bombay.

Through the Alumni TimeBank, 16 alumni were onboarded to deliver 16 structured small-group mentoring sessions, contributing 16 hours and engaging 45 students, with 100% session completion. The pilot received strong feedback (Alumni: 4.7/5 | Students: 4.7/5), validating the Alumni TimeBank as a structured, credible, and governance-ready platform with measurable outcomes.

Building on this success, the Alumni TimeBank is designed to be scalable and replicable across programmes, ensuring long-term sustainability and sustained alumni engagement.

We warmly encourage our alumni community to become part of the Alumni TimeBank and give back to their alma mater by contributing their time, experience, and expertise in ways that create meaningful and lasting impact.
