IIT Bombay’s recent US Roadshow, spanning multiple cities, marked a significant milestone in fostering deeper connections with alumni across the United States. The Roadshow provided a unique platform for IIT Bombay’s leadership to engage with alumni, share updates on the Institute’s progress, and discuss opportunities for continued collaboration. The Roadshow also brought together over 500 IIT Bombay alumni spanning six decades, strengthening the global IIT Bombay community and reinforcing the Institute's commitment to excellence in education, research, and innovation.

Prof. Pratibha Sharma appointed the Cummins Chair Professor

Cummins Technologies India Private Limited has established the Cummins Chair Professorship at IIT Bombay to promote excellence in teaching and research in Green Energy.

Founded in 2008, Cummins Technologies India Pvt. Ltd. includes divisions like Turbo Technologies, Emission Solutions, Business Services, Fuel Systems, and the Phaltan Engine Plant. While Turbo Technologies leads in air handling systems for engines, Emission Solutions designs advanced exhaust systems. Cummins’ Business Services handles global shared services, its Fuel Systems focuses on fuel efficiency and emissions, and the Phaltan Plant manufactures key engine components, supporting their global operations.

As we step into a brand-new year, brimming with possibilities and aspirations, I am filled with immense pride and optimism for the journey ahead. A new year is not just a passage of time; it is a fresh chapter waiting to be written and holds the promise of innovation, collaboration, and shared success. Let us embrace 2025 with enthusiasm, working hand in hand to build on our legacy and achieve even greater heights.

 

As we wrap up an eventful 2024, I’d like to give you a brief update on the key events and milestones that have made this past month so impactful.

 

It was wonderful to meet so many of you in person at the IIT Bombay US Roadshow 2024. It was a resounding celebration of connections, collaborations, and community. Spanning five cities—New York, San Francisco, Austin, Dallas, and Portland—the Roadshow brought together over 500 alumni across six decades, fostering meaningful dialogue and shared purpose. With engaging keynote sessions, insightful panel discussions, and vibrant networking opportunities, the events highlighted IIT Bombay’s global vision and the transformative role of its alumni. December was also a time for some joyous and spirited reunions on campus. It was so heartening to hear the roaring greets and the backslappings amongst the alumni as they all came together to meet each other. The single most and important sentiment that was expressed and rhymed amongst all the alumni was their deep sense of gratitude to their alma mater for their professional and personal growth.

 

As we welcome 2025, I am delighted to announce the launch of our Social Impact Trailblazers series in the newsletter where we are celebrating IIT Bombay alumni who are making extraordinary contributions to society. Kicking off this series is none other than Dr. Pramod Chaudhari, a visionary leader and a pioneer in sustainable innovation. Dr. Chaudhari’s journey exemplifies the transformative power of IIT Bombay’s ethos—where excellence meets purpose. Through this series, we aim to honour the changemakers who inspire us all by driving progress and creating a meaningful impact on communities worldwide. Look for a Q&A with Dr. Chaudhari and a detailed profile of Praj Industries in the Social Impact Trailblazers section of the newsletter.

 

Corporate collaborations are integral to IIT Bombay’s progress and innovation. Two noteworthy partnerships are with HSBC and Samsung. The IIT Bombay-HSBC Green Hydrogen Initiative, launched in September 2023, supports India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission and includes several promising projects now being incubated at IIT Bombay. IIT Bombay’s legacy of excellence is deeply enriched by the ongoing generosity of its alumni and well-wishers, who contribute in transformative ways to the Institute’s growth. The Institute has received a series of property donations from several of our alumni and they underscore the profound impact these contributions have on sustaining IIT Bombay’s academic and infrastructural advancements.
